Were they actually used in the later stages of the war? I was under the impression that the guppy convertions were done after 1945, influenced by the elektrobotte designs, which was accessible to the allies only after the war.

Daniel Prates is correct, the GUPPY Conversion project was not approved until June 1946 and the first two converted boats, USS Odax (SS-484) and USS Pomodon (SS-486) did not complete until 1947.

I recall seeing some work on Guppy conversion boats around here, but it's been a while. No idea if anything was ever released.

In any case, it wouldn't hurt having them on a just-for-fun basis - someone here in the comunity even designed a submersible battleship!
