Default BDU....Idiots? Or Trolls? I Say Both!

So, it's August, the day of my first patrol, I got my VIIB all shined up spick and span, torpedoes and food stocked, and I'm ready to go. BDU contacts me with briefing and a patrol area, informing me to patrol BF 10 for 24 hours and then to return to base.

Not even bothering to check where the coordinates lead, I jump to my U Boat, gather my men and ship off, we leave dock booking it at 18 knots gramophone playing heavy rock music that hasn't even been invented yet.

After we leave dock, me and my navigator Bernard decide to plot a course to BF10. So I plotted us out of the harbor and into the BF Sector, but from there I hit a snag.

Get a good look at that screen, because I spent a good portion of my patrol looking for the elusive "BF10" in that area, unfortunately either I'm blind or BF10 does not exist. BF11-99 are there, but BF10? Gone, nowhere to be found.

So I think to myself, maybe I misread the briefing, lets take another peek.

FFFFFUuuuuuuuuu- ahem*

***Transmission Begin-

Dear BDU,
I am writing to inform you that God has stolen my patrol sector, until it is returned I will be unable to complete this patrol officially, therefore, I'm going to spend this time I could be using to prepare for the war to instead waste an entire journey's worth of food and fuel, and believe me I have half a mind to shoot my entire stockpile of eels out randomly into the sea. Thank you, I look forward to seeing you guys upon my return of this no doubt fruitful patrol.

P.S. Next time you send me a patrol area, please make sure it exists first.

-End Transmission***

But nice post!

Wait till you get the NULL patrol sector....

and you'll be on the lookout for xxx0 patrol sectors from now on, there is no 0 (spoon?), just 1-9.

Thank you for clearing that up, I was half expecting to be called an idiot and shown where BF10 is when I started this post, nice to know I'm not the only one who's run into this, thank ye kindly!

I've actually encountered the NULL patrol before, twice if I'm not mistaken. But receiving a patrol sector that doesn't exist sure threw me for a loop, wasn't expecting that one

Got one that was 100% land once, with my first install.
I too, was an unhappy and confused camper.

No problems with the newer install.

I've had BF10 assigned a couple of times. The first time, I was utterly puzzled, too. But the boys at the "O" club filled me in later... and now I know it means "License to roam, you big renegade!"

You will get "NULL" assigned any time you dock somewhere else than homebase (such as at a resupply ship). I've been told that means "Take the long way home."

BF10 is a top secret 'hidden sector' that only the elite of the elite have access to...

I take it the boys at BDU also forgot to show you the secret handshake and give you your special decoder ring. Ah well, accidents happen.
