Strange PC phone call

I have just had a phone call from what sounded like a call centre (noise in the background) and this guy said my PC is in danger from a virus I picked up which will destroy everything on it. He went on asking if I would go on my PC so he could check? This sounded to me a hoax, I didn't say what product I was using just that I have anti virus software. Has anyone else encountered such a situation from receiving a phone call?

Just been doing some research on the Net, looks like some one tried to scam me! Damn cheek of it, you have to treat not known phone calls as suspect!

That is interesting, the gall of these people!
A sad part of this all is that some poor people fall for this.
I can just see a dear old lady or an elderly gentleman sitting at home somewhere and receiving such a phone call
