Default Fires not deadly enough?

Hi there.
Just started a new game no mods etc..

I hit a convoy 2 torpedoes for each ship (I hit two ships.)
Anyways why aren't fires more deadly?

In the game they look like effects rather then something that as long as it burns eats away at the material its burning..

AFAIK fires are just for show, they appear based on the level of damage the torpedos do and dont add any more damage so they can burn forever with no extra damage

That's not an entirely true statement. If you have my FX_Update mod installed the fires will cause damage over time
