Winning Southampton Spitfire memorial design revealed

The winning design for a new £2m Spitfire memorial in Southampton, where the plane was first built, has been revealed.

Nick Hancock beat more than 300 entries with his design of a Spitfire on top of a mast that resembles a vapour cloud.

The 131ft (40m) replica - one-and-a-half times the size of the actual plane - will stand at Trafalgar dock overlooking Southampton waterfront. The Spitfire Tribute Foundation hopes to raise £2m to build the monument.

Love to see some other perspectives. Any other machine-o-war monuments on this scale anywhere else? I mean outside of museum restored originals?

To a beautiful machine.

Yeah, that's a prize worth crowing about.

I agree with Jim and Steve. This particular aircraft is simply poetry in motion. Just beautiful lines. She comes in second to the P-40 on my list of all favorite aircraft. I'm very lucky to see both the P-40 fly as well as the Supermarine Spitfire. Just wonderful aircraft. Not to mention what each aircraft accomplished at the hands of the few who knew how to utilize the strong points of each respective aircraft. It think the monument brings out that poetry in motion with the spiral trailing the aircraft.

The poor Hurricane is on the same list as the Lancaster and Liberator. The B-17 takes the cake everytime.

Huh? There were other bombers besides the B-17? Nonsense.

As much as I love seeing a 'Fort fly overhead, there is only one time I've ever seen a Libby fly over... and unfortunately she was too far up to see much. I doubt that I will ever see a Lanc in my lifetime.
