Better more accurate range finding technique then ruler for MT
Well, although i just got my first Kill in Manual targeting, ive figured out a GREAT range finding technique. I gotta say man targeting may take a while, but its also Somewhat fun and SOOOOO rewarding when you see that ship burst into flames like That song from the rock band incubus. i still only play at 52% realism now, and use map contacts and no duds, i have found a way to accurately find a range.
its something you use ALLLLLLL THE TIME. Wanna know? For those of you who dont use this, and sorry if people already use this method alot heres the best one: Plot a Course! told you you use it all the time. zoomb in to MAXIMUM magnification on map, and where you plan to fire, just plot a course and mouse over the tip of that course, and you get Down-to-the-number readings. its better then the ruler that has 50 meter intervals. what if your targeting a destroyer? those 50 M COULD make a difference if its going fast enough. Hope this helped....somewhat. i know it might not make THAt much of a difference, but the first kill i got, i probably wouldve missed. i had my range at 900, when really it was at 983. granted this wouldnt make make a very large, slow target miss at closer range, but its always good to be more accurate. Happy Hunting! ![]() ![]() screenies: this is how i found range. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the Ship ![]()

![]() ![]() if you think it is satisying now, just wait until you actually use manual targeting and see the explosion. It is the best part of sub simming. Shut off those map icons ![]() |

This help for playing the game, not the sim.
Anyway, range is not an issue as there is plenty of mod that deal with the stadimeter. The main problem in playing the sim is finding out the right speed of the target. I just can't find a proper solution for this using 100% realism .. except taking multiple range readings and then asking the nub wo for the target speed :/ |

i figured out after i posted this that it was associated with map contacts, and i realized it wasnt as good as i figured. sorry.

Glad it helped at least somebody
![]() i tried 7 times to sink a LST on open ocean. EVERY time it overshot. i kept using the ruler, then on the 7th attempt i plot a course and it gave me 785m. I used that and it finally hit ![]() just barely though. hit the tip of the bow. there was something wrong with my TDC. i input all my data. waited for him to roll over the "0" mark ( i got all my data set for a shot there) and it just kept overshooting.

Hi CaptainMattJ
If you have promoted your torpedo, it may be that the extra speed is causing you to miss or just hit the bow. There is a mod to correct this if you dont already have it. Your method for manual targeting was the same as I used when learning. I found this a good way to get used to keying the info into the TDC. The next stage for me was learning the Dick oKane method. With this I could forget all about range and focus on methods for getting target speed. (Still use this method alot with TDW AI mod - all torps hitting at same time then escape). Once I was comfortable with speed I started using the stadimeter. At the moment I am learning the four bearings method so I can remove the need for any map info. (Kruater has an automated script for this that I find helpful ![]() |
