gameplay question

ive been playing this series for awhile now and i love gwx ive been thinking about purchasing this game but i want to know how it play, ie. is it a sim or an arcade game(i think i saw hp bars on the ships), are there mods that are close to gwx or something that will work well enough till some kind of super mod comes(if ever). how bad are the bugs and again any mods to fix them. guess thats all i can think of right now, and yes i know about there terribad drm but i can usually work around that garbage
