Default Interesting paper on subs during Cuban Missile Crisis

http://www.cnrs-scrn.org/northern_ma..._13_3_1-19.pdf

I found this passage interesting:

"According to Mosgovoi the Russians repaired the decoy ejector, restoring
their full diving capability, and modified their underwater communications set to transmit
on the same frequency as Cecil's sonar. When no aircraft were present B-36 submerged and
transmitted answering pulses which confused the destroyer's sonar. The Foxtrot escaped and
shifted to a new patrol area for a further two weeks.40"

Clever - sonar jamming.

If you find that sort of history interesting (and who wouldn't), you might want to research Vasili Arkhipov and how he may have single-handed prevented WWIII during the Missile Crisis

It makes you wonder just how close the two sides were to actual military conflict.

My understanding was that Kennedy was prepared to go all the way if necessary.

I think both sides were. This just shows how, in the heat of the moment, governments can lose sight of the objective and get caught up in the emotions at the time.
