So last night I re-loaded my very boring game. I was to patrol the Rockall banks. It was June 7, 1940. Up the whole east coast of England I hit only one ship. Got to the banks and had seen nothing else. Did my 24 hours, went down to BF17. no joy. Decided to check off the coast of Spain. Nothing.
Finally at the mouth of Gibraltar I hit another ship. This was the worst dry spell I'd ever seen. So I decided to raid Gibraltar. I sailed in nice and smooth at dark, with rain. Nailed three merchants in the front docks. Cruised west and nailed two more. Of course the AI is sending the little Flower class escorts and patrol boats nowhere, as they get all jammed up in the quays. I worked west along the docs, and entered the western opening into the heart of the harbor. I nailed another ship, and then picked off the Flower class that had come to a standstill in front of me 300m away. Then, as I was spinning the periscope around in the dark, THERE WAS A BATTLECRUISER! But I only had two torpedoes left inside the boat! I shot them both at Battleship, and they both hit, but she did not sink! What to do. OK, it was cheap, but here is what I did. I decided to drive my sub into the heart of the harbor, into one of the quays, surface, and pull in my external torpedoes! So I went there, only to discover, in the dark, that there was a freighter sitting in the quay! So I edged my sub in alongside the freighter inside the quay, and blew ballast and surfaced next to the freighter. There was actually a sailor on the freighter manning a machine gun, and he was moving the gun up and down tracking us, but he never opened fire! I don't know why. Of course other ships were shooting at us, and spotlights were pointing at us, but they could not hit us. My exhausted crew pulled in all the external eels, then I submerged and went back and put 3 more eels into the Battleship, sinking it. Turned out it was the Hood. With two torpedoes left in the stern tubes, I fled the harbor and made it back to Wilhelmshaven. ![]() Steve |
