Default One more Kaleun off the fence

Well Kaleuns, I have taken the dive and picked up SH5. I was originally going to get it at release, but the DRM put me on the fence. After waiting a while to read the reviews and peruse the Subsim reaction I figured I could manage to find a way to have some fun with the game despite the flaws.

I do have to say that the screenshot thread and the great modders here (along with official patch support) were big factors in persuading me to come down off the fence and get my feet on deck.

As for the game itself, I have only spent a couple hours with it so far but I do see a lot of potential here. The DRM is annoying but we've all heard all about that already. I spent much of my initial time with the game playing a couple single missions (and installing mods) just so I could tinker with the interface and run around the boat. One of the best things about SH5 is climbing the ladders from the control room straight on up to the bridge. There's just something awesome about coming up out of the hatch and seeing the sky.

I did start up a career to get through the "tutorial" mission, but the game inexplicably crashed to the desktop after I had sunk the ships and was headed back to Kiel. So, final judgment is reserved for the patched game, but I have a feeling I'll be spending a good bit of time with SH5, bugs and all, in the near future.

It's way to early to write it off....

Given some time and additional support as far as patches I think SH5 will
will stand on it's own merits in the future. As you mentioned there are
already some great mods for it.

As far as crashes, have only had two, and I think they were created
due to a " mod salad " I had going.

Could be mod-related, although I only had a handful I was trying. I'm running it again mod-free to see how she handles.

I respect your decision. For me, the more I read, the less likely I am to get this game.

I will be interested to see what the new patch fixes and what it breaks. I will also be interested to see if Ubisoft authorizes any patches after patch #2. One possible reason for the delay is that this may be the last patch they offer. That's just my opinion and is not based on anything I've heard.

If patch #2 is a good patch and a third patch is authorized, then I may still consider purchasing the game at Christmas time. Certainly not before then though.

I had the same suspicion. But I suppose we'll just have to wait and see for that.
