Default [WEP] New Periscope, no need for a Stadimeter.

And of course that should say [WIP] damn lack of sleep.....
Been working on getting this new periscope calibrated today, and right now am about 100m off which is much better than the stadimeter at present.
I am thinking 100m could also just be chalked up to human error in taking a reading.

Here is how this works....
Using the new and improved Recog manual I get the mast height.
I take that number and multiply it by 100 so in this case it is 39x100=3900
Then I take a reading from the periscope. As you can see it is between 3.5 and 3.8 marks up from the waterline. I then divide 3900 by my reading. This gives me my range. In this case if I divide on the small end by 3.5 I get 1100 and some change, if I divide by 3.8 I get 1026. The ship is actually sitting at 1000m exactly.

So all together.
Mast height X 100 / Periscope reading = distance.

I plan on releasing a couple of versions of this. One for the Stock UI, then also for Darkwraith's UI mods.
Hoping I can just add in a couple of files that he hasn't modded to keep things all nice and neat.

Should have something out in a couple of hours unless I pass out.
Of course I can't log into the game right now seems UBI is down so testing against Darkwraiths mods may take a bit.

you only changed a .dds file right to change the lines?

Actually changed a DDS file, and the cameras.cam file.
In my stand alone I also moved some things around in the periscope page files but that isn't needed for it to work since you already relocated your scope.
JSGME doesnt throw any errors when I add it after your mods, but just want to make sure it displays correctly as I had to calibrate the marks a lot to get good readings.

Looks good.
Something like this will allow me to use "no map updates"

At the first zoom level (1.5x) it is yes. For some reason however at second zoom it is coming out all wonkey. I am thinking I need to adjust the zoom settings to get it working correctly at larger zooms.

The image is on the scope so it zooms with the scope so marks stay the same no matter the zoom level. (wonder If I mount the Scale so it is not actually a part of the scope if it would work better. Have to poke around the menu editor to see how to add the scale image independantly) I can't seem to find the standard Green scale image in the menu editor for some reason so I haven't been able to get rid of it at the lower zoom levels.

For now I can figure as I mentioned above in default zoom. I figured if I used a multiple zoom x3 or x4 all I would have to do is either divide or multiply the number I got x3 or x4 to get the correct info i.e. at max zoom target takes up 2 marks and is 30m tall. So that would be 3000/2 is 1500.

Now if I were at minimum Zoom the 1500 would be correct however if I am using the larger zoom this is not correct. I figured if I multiplied by 3 or 4 (depending on my zoom value ((4.5x = 3)) or ((6x = 4)) then I would get a correct range but right now it is not coming up correctly.
Just going to take a little thinking how to set it up to always be correct at larger ranges.
Right now < 3000 using standard zoom (1.5x) it is accurate on everything I have tested it on.

so after you work out the kinks are you going make the measuring lines thinner? looks good though and it sounds like a fun way to play

Already taken them down to 1pixel width on the newest one ive made.
Trying to figure out an exact way to measure where the marks need to go to be accurate at any zoom level.
I get one set dialed in, then the others are off so it is indeed a lot of trial and error.

Hey Emtguf

Now i dont know what you exactly changed in Camera.dat, but if you changed Zoom from x4 to x6 and x1 to x1.5 then you will also have to tinker with the Angular Angle as well.

Try posting you changes here. I made a mod for the SH-4 periscope for about a year ago, and i have made a local change here to my camera.dat using the stock scope graphics so my scope is x1.5 and x6.

In order to calibrate the amount of ship you see in front of you with both zooms you have to adjust angular angle to that the image in the scope (left side to right side) fills the 38° and 9° of angular angle that it should. In linier field of view that is 157 meters from left to right in x6 zoom at 1000 meters. aka if you place an Emden Light Cruiser at 1000 meters with 90° AOB it should just touch both sides of your scope image in x6 as the Emden is 156 meters long.

In x1.5 (with 38° Angular Field of View) the Linier Field of View is 663.1 meters (17.45 x 38 x1000 = meters FOV @ 1000 meters range)

Shoot me an PM with your mail address and I'll ship you a mission with the above.

Sounds good, this may be the solution to the stadimeter issue.

Can you make this while incorporating Arclight's changes in his periscope mod by increasing the optical zoom?

Yes

But I would like to have the correct graticules in the "hole" first. Ie. in the alpha layer of the periscope graphics. We are talking about that in another thread...

pweeee 3 threads on the same subject heheh
