Default things i havent seen metioned yet

hi,

most of the things ive seen commented on so far relate to the user interface or how it looks graphically.

id like to hear some opinions on the following.

1 - how is the new campaign system? is it scripted so that convoys or ships will be in the same place everytime you play? is this new branching style of campaign a big improvement over previous ones? i assume you are assigned patrol areas, if you venture from these area do you still find targets?

2 - how is depthcharging? being depthcharged in vanilla SH3 and 4 wasnt very immersive for me, not much shaking etc. mods improved this so whats it like in SH5?

3 - how is enemy AI? again, any advancement in this over the previous SH tiltles?

4 - wolfpacks! i know there are AI subs but how do they function in the campaign?

5 - anyone conducted any night attacks, how did they play out?

cheers

I'm still on my first patrol, so I can only give a partial answer, but this doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm currently on my way to the Western Approaches Sept '39 and have run into a single Polish merchant coming out of the Skagerrak, and am getting constant radio contact reports of convoys and task forces all over the world map. (God I hate that part of stock Silent Hunter games)

1. not sure yet, I haven't even unlocked stage two of the campaign, but I've done maybe ten patrols, and you are indeed assigned patrol areas (or, like yesterday, missions like sneaking into Scapa Flow to look for unguarded targets of opportunity! That one was pretty exciting.), and over the course of various patrols build up to the campaign target which is displayed on the map (i.e. sink 50.000 tons off the british coast), I assume to advance to the next campaign step. But nothing is explained in the manual, so I really don't know.
You do find targets outside your patrol area. Indeed, I've been ordered to range out and find targets of opportunity, and I did! Hanging around ports pays off, if you can avoid the destroyer screens.
2. Don't know - hasn't happened to me yet! But I assume this is going to change, the AI seems pretty decent.
3. LIke I said in 2, it seems OK, does realistic-ish things when looking for me (as far as I can tell), tries to cut off likely escape routes etc. Really haven't been attacked enough to tell though. Oh, and spotter planes fly 90% at night, and rarely if ever spot you. I did have one call in a destroyer that actually got me, though, after ignoring it and hitting time accel one time too many!
4. Dunno. I've seen other friendly subs, and seen "ship sunk" icons on the map. Don't know if that's the result of cooperative efforts or not.
5. Very well. I snuck up on an unescorted convoy, and while staying out of their machine gun range popped a few with the 88 before they ran away. I'll tell ya, though, don't get too close! The brownshoes will hose you with AA machine guns and you'll sink (eventually)!

1. Yes the campaign system is just like SHIV with added mission types. And now they have some sort of dynamic supply and war victory type thing going to added to it. Its one of the more interesting things they actually seem to have did right.. Hard to tell though since all the other stuff I hate so far.

2.I have attacked 3 convoys so far and not 1 single DD protecting said convoy even bothered to come after me or even change diriection. 1 time they did but I had to surface to do it... And when they found me and looked for me they never droped a single depth charge.

3.Look at answer 2.

4. No idea yet, but they do mention it in loading screeens. Have not experienced it yet. Still too early yet,.. Could not even get them to send me a milk cow.

5. Night attacks are just like the other games, visablity for the AI is about 0. I ran into a convoy at night and I was no less then 1200 meters aways from them and they never saw me. Conducted a surface attack then dived. DD did not respond yet again.

I will add my own rant. The new Auto TDC sucks. Can read some of my other post on my rants about the new system they have for AUTO TDC. Its a dog.. Should of left that aloone.

For some reason the Enemy planes just fly over you. Ran into tons of them.. They just fly by as me and my crew wave.

No idea if they see me or not, because I can hear them.. But I can't see them. LOL.

The map update shows them just about flying right over head though.

Also I can't end my current patrol. Back at keil and in the sub pens but won't let me end.

Go figure. Game has lots of issues. LOTS.

Apparently you must be in very close proximty to the dock for the 'anchor' to appear. Try a different Penn.

Make sure you finish ALL of the tutorial before you try to dock in Kiel. If you still have anything other than "Dock At Kiel" yellow ! icons at the top, finish what it's telling you. I'm guessing it's the "get to 1024x TC" one you're stuck on.

yep lost of good info there. the new campaign system does sound excellent. the AI sounds dodgy but this was the same with previous SH games as well, hopefully this will be improved on with patches and modding.

bit concerned bout recon planes flying at night time, that just sounds silly. it would be different if they had radar but if they did they wouldnt be flyin right by without attacking
