Default Sonar & Photo Recon

Two questions: Do I assume that ships (DD's) that are stationary, are still operating their sonar stations?, and how do I take photos while on a recon misson?

I have targeted dead on, DD's, from a 90 degree angle from 1000', and just about the time the torpedoes are to make contact, the DD is moving and gone in an instant. Am I wasting time and gun powder in this senario?

I can not find in the maual how to make the camera work in order to complete a recon mission. I'd appreciate some direction here also.

I'm still new at SH4 and am enjoying the graphics as I learn.

Much obliged - Akio

Overall, it's a waste of time, unless you use better tactics and want to use torps on a DD. They can easily see the trail of you M14's and will dodge them. The ships in the game have turbo stop and start power.
If you have M18's, wakeless torps and they don't hear you, you should get them.

If you want to shoot them with M14's, you got to freeze them. Need to shoot torps fast and together. Aim one manually just in front of him then the next one in the middle. You get the principle. In some fashion, you sorta have to waste one to freeze him, so the other can hit.

DD's that are stationary are passive listening. Basically they're two types of stationary. Those in harbors are fixed and will not move. They're considered in port, thus fixed. Obvious, the ones moving can go stationary, but since they're on duty they can move. Both can use sonar, but the ones ported won't chase you.

For the photo recon missions you must get close to the target about 2,000 yards may be a little more. Find a ship and lock the periscope on it and in the periscope tool bar there is an icon with a camera on it. If you have the right ship locked the icon will highlight, click on it and you have your picture You may have to photo more than one ship.

Armistead's advise on shooting DDs is good. The best time to do so in in bad weather or at night, not so easy to see the wakes.

At night I can hit DDs with fast Mk14s. They don't see them in time to evade.
During the day you gotta aim a spread at em. Or just leave em be, which is probably the smarter option.
