Default Problem with GWX and SHC

Hello subs commanders! I've been having some trouble with this game and I need some help...

I'm using SH3 +GWX3+SH commander 3.2 under Vista. I've installed everything outside Program Files. Here's my problem:

*Water clarity has been permantly changed to a low level (it's darker than usual) and I'm unable to fix it changing this feature with SHCommander.
This is not really a big problem since it turns out to be more realistic (can't see anything with the periscope below say 90ms or at any depth during night).

*Weather system is not working as it should be. It seems to me that it's using stock SH3 weather system where you could have days with exactly the same weather.
This is my biggest problem since I really hate having sun for days, or storm for a whole week, etc.

I've tried reinstalling with no results. GWX alone works just fine. But I can't leave port without SHCommander! I need it!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi Volka, welcome aboard.
I am not sure about the water clarity. Changing it in CMDR options to "20" should work; if it doesn't post the problem in the SH3CMDR thread and JScones will help.
As far as the weather, long periods can occur with any mod install, as the problem is with the basic files in SHIII which have never been fixed by the developers and are inaccessible to us. There is a mod to help with the long storms called "Stop the Rain" by Rubini: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=search
It was made for GWXv2.1 but it should work in v3.0;
There is no fix for perfect weather, however.

IIRC this is a GWX change rather than anything to do with SH3C. The water loses clarity as you go deeper until you can't see a thing below a certain depth.

As irish said, this is a SH3 issue rather than a GWX or SH3C one. Weather is more variable in GWX but you may still experience many days of storms. It can be especially bad if you stay in TC - for some reason SH3 doesn't seem to recognise weather changes at high TC so try reducing to x128 or lower and see if it improves anything.

Default weather

I was having serious issues with prolong weather systems lasting for days. I have used TC over 128 many times to speed things along and when I have done this the weather rarely changes. Now...if I need a break or eat or whatever, I will set the TC to 32-128 and the weather gradually changes. So...not being an expert, I think that the faster TC does indeed hinder weather changes.

Thank you for your replies.

Playing along with SH Commander I found that the water clarity thing was not its fault... in fact it does change clarity. It was the mod 16-atmosphere, it makes everything darker and this is something SHC can't fix. It's a little annoying to see the faces of your seamen darker than their hands for example, but not big deal.

About the weather system, I didn't know that speeding was bad for the weather thanks for that tip
Sometimes I get like 6 days with same weather, other times around 3. I'd say that 3-4 days of same weather is my mean.

Yep, going around at anything higher than 256x TC is just asking for the weather to stick to you like glue. Sometimes this can be a good thing, but if you're not careful you can end up inside a perpetual cyclone...

My own personal workaround is to limit the max TC (Using SH3C) to 256x. It makes for long patrols, but it helps keep down the weather bugs. And besides, you get a miniscule sense of how tedious life must've been for the submarine crews back then. (I'm sure it can't be much more exciting nowadays )

Hello again!

I can't solve my weather problem! I've using low TC's as you suggested (<x256), and I still get 3-4 days of exactly the same weather (not even a wind direction change!). It doesn't seem right...
I also noted that on low TC my crew get tired faster than on higher TC. Another SH bug?

I've just tried the "Stop the Rain" mod with negative results (it doesn't do anything at all). I think it only works if you have bad weather but I used during regular weather.

What can I do??

I can't really help with the weather, but as for fatigue, yes, lower TC does inrease the speed at which your crew tires out. Not really so mch a bug as, well, I dunno, maybe it is a bug, but not really game-breaking, I guess. More of a feature, if you ask me, so you don't have to start/stop at high TC to swap out crew.

Anyways, if you want, you can play with the SHC fatigue settings to get some different results.

3 to 4 days of the same weather is not unusual - try looking out of the window

At high TC your crew will not get tired as TC needs to be below a certain level before your crew tire (a bit like weather changes).

AFAIK, the 'Stop the Rain' mod does just that by forcing SH3 to change the weather setting, so using it in regular weather will have little to no effect.

Hm. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.
Real weather is in fact very caothic, it can change very suddenly.

As it does sometimes in SH3. I have recently watched a thunderstorm roll in on my U-boat and the wind/sea state pick up over the course of 20 minutes in game at 1x TC.

However, as stated above... running above 256xTC can make the weather "stick" and resist logical change.

Running above 256xTC causes other problems relating to sensors and detection too... so its a good idea to run at 256xTC or less.

(I don't like to run above 128xTC because you may miss a contact/ship spotting. I've modified my personal installation to only show map contacts within visual range... Even radio contact reports in my installation reveal only general/minimal information.)

I currently live in Belfast where ir rains for days on end, and spent the last couple of years in Western Canada where it's sunny for days in the summer and snows for days in the winter! You're right, real weather can change quite suddenly but if you were looking out of the window at 1024TC you'd get the general impression of the weather rather than the chaotic mess that it really is.

Try running at 32 or 64 for a short time and you'll soon notice a difference.

I live in the MidWest of the US; there is a saying here: "If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change." Except for the aftermaths of a hurricane, weather here rarely last longer than a few days.
Of course, the nearest ocean is 2000Km away.
