Default Pc problem

hi hunters.

have recently been having trouble with my pc. thought it might be the hard drive/disk giving up. experienced sudden loss of cpu power. then after some tests it has come to light that svchost.exe + others ie; wuaucit.exe which is an automatic update process are now sapping huge quantities ( sometimes 100% ) of power/memory at random during game play and when computer is just idling. have tried a number of things but to no avail. has any one else experienced this and been able to fix it.

system runs sweet when these processess do not fire up. all drivers are up to date and Automatic Updates too.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Kind of a shot in the dark, but did you try turning off 'Automatic Updates'? I forget how at the moment, but I think you head to Control panel and go from there.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, I've seen that happen several times, but each time closing them down with Task Manager solved it.

many thanks Weiß Pinguin - seriously!! many thanks

it has been a night mare. i have been thinking my hard drive will crash so i have been trying to save all my important stuff - before this might happen.

i have just been trying a programme called 'Tune-Up' a free 30 day trial. it has pointed out several problems which i have changed. my pc is quiet at the moment !! but i have my doubts...

i will now go and turn off Automatic Updates - checking now and again to update them.

cheers for your help and posting too!

One thing that I do is turn off all necessary services to conserve RAM before I fire up SH3. My system is probably about 5 or 6 years old and I had some issues running GWX when I installed it. My system has about 1.5 GB of RAM.

I noticed that the system would start thrashing its hard drive, while I was trying to get out of port. To me that suggested that the system was out of physical memeory, so it was starting to use huge chunks of virtual memory/paging file to render the neat-o harbor ships/etc.

To resolve I created a small .bat script that just runs the Microsoft 'net stop' command against those services I do not want or need running while trying to sink Allied shipping. I also trun off my Antivirus protection while I am playing to save on RAM. After I am done playing, I make sure I reboot to get all my services back on and get the AV back up and running.

It was a bit of a pain at first, but I got to used to the 2 minute process to free up the precious RAM so my crew can process order for Herr Kaluen as quick as possible.

Hope this helps.
