Bringing this manual back to the surface

Hi everyone!!!

I just want to make everyone aware of this little gem posted back in 2007 and still valid.

The INSRM manual or Imperial Navy Ship recognition Manual containing tables for quick reference when doing manual targeting!

I searched for it but could not find it easily and thought the rest of the community could benefit from using it. Finally I traced it and have it for download on my own filefront account.

"Centered75" made it in a pdf-format for all of us to share. Thanks matey!!

I have been using it since and it is still valid for TM1.7 minus a few new ships but those can easily be added with some work. (I have also made a simple version for SHIII and the ships in GWX3).

Here is a new link for download:

http://files.filefront.com/INSRM+302.../fileinfo.html

Enjoy!

/OB

Post Edit: As you can see it also takes care of determining speed. Just clock the time for the ship to pass the crosshairs and look in the table. = speed!

That is a great thing !

RFB fiddled with mast heights I'm afraid but this shouldn't ruin the use of this manual. Should be available for watching in-game, though

Actually I have an original USN recon manual where i can pick the neccesary data on length and mast height of US/British military vessels.

I am experimenting with an excel sheet now trying to recreate what Centered75 did and I have so far got it working. => means that i can calculate new tables for the added ships in the recon manual.

+ of course being able to do so for the US ships in a IJN manual..(when time permits)

The models of the ships in RFB and TM look the same graphically meaning any values on the different mods dont affect this at all unless someone have redrawn the model itself.

What I say is that it is the "ratio" between the length and height measured in marks that is essential. => should not matter which mod you use if you have a correct basic value.

Another example on measured aspect ratio: (My own screens)

The above means 2 x 7 Divided by 5. The go to the table and ta ta: Akizuki in this case has a 28,5 degrees AOB.

I will be back with more!

Cheers

GOZO,

Here is the last post from Centred75 regarding his excellent Ship Recognition Manual http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=117434

His download link, which still works is http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=01905726

Is this where you found it? V3 as he refers to it.

Haven't checked to see if the missing ships you are talking about are in there or not.

Would be good to upload this to SUBSIM downloads after you get it finished.

I for one would like to see it completed.

Thanks.

I've had that ONI for a while now, though I couldn't find a good online album to display all 269 pages for a long time.

Hi! This is a very good question.

The thing is that it is independent of whitch scope or zoom you use! Now how come?

The theory behind is simple and you can make the tables fit the scope you are using at the moment i.e whitch mod you are using.

The principle is AOB=arcsinus (measured ratio/Fixed ratio) giving a result in radians.

To get the values in the table in degrees you have to multiply with 180/pi .

So what is Fixed ratio? It is the specific ratio between the length of a vessel and its mast height!

See above again. I use the data in meters or feet to obtain it.

The Measured Ratio is what you get from taking a reading with your scope at a certain moment.

2 x 7= length, 5=height

This last measure is up to you and what scope and/or zoom you are using. Strange? No.
It is all about a quote between two readings. No units involved at all. BUT important that you use the same length units for both horizontal and vertical readings!!

Now, this differs between scopes. Some have plenty of marks across the view like the "Maxoptics" in SHIII and horizontal reading can vary between 6 and 40 marks while the scope above (SHIV TM1.x) gives about 28 as maximum length with 12 as max height.

To make a suitable table for this is a job in it self and Centered75 adopted his for SHIV with basic optics.

With TM1.7 there is no problem since the zoom levels allow you to adopt in order to get values that fit into the tables. It actually works fine.

What I have done no is making an EXCEL spreadsheet with 26 columns and 11 rows. In each cell I have the formula for making the AOB depending on what numbers there are on the vertical/horizontal readings.

This mean I can make tables totally tailored for the scopes/mods i use. tedious, maybe but I think its' fun. Just put in the Fixed Ratio in one cell and the desired series of numbers for vertical/horizontal and the table shows data that you can copy and paste in to a MS word table or similar.

This I made yesterday for a Medium cargo in SHIII using GWX 3 Gold and the "Maxoptics" option.

Tested it and compared redings using map contacts "on" and it works!

The essence of it all is that it is not dependable at all on which mod/scope you use!

I also did just like "Centered75" and made a similar function for determining speed by clocking it and compare with the table so I made one for that too. Works as well. (The input here is ship length of course). seconds=Length/(knots x 0,5144). Long live excel!

The picture I have humbly borrowed from the printable SH3 Ship ID manual.

My aim is to make pdf-verions af all tables for both the newer ships in TM1.7 and those in SHIII.

Tested the tables above yesterday in the "happy times" mission using GWX3 and scored a hit on a m crgo from 2200m so I assume the tables are ok so far.

Will keep you informed and maybe later be able to have a thingie for download.

Cheers

I know the theory behind it and understand it, but my graphical/editing skills are lacking

I ll keep in the thread and look forward to progress report, meanwhile I have posted the file to our SubRon downloads page for the guys playing manual to play with and report.
