U-1225 was heavily damaged by depth bombs while attempting to find a way past the anti-submarine nets the Allies had placed across the mouth of the estuary at Lamor-Piages and Gavres. Despite this, KptLt. Unger guided U-1225 past the ASW vessels patrolling outside the sub-net and escaped across the Bay of Biscay. While en route to Bergen, U-1225 encountered and sank 7 vessels totalling 36,124 tons. While maneuvering to attack the last of these, U-1225 was severly damaged by VLR Liberators flying out of Iceland. Despite losing one diesel engine, Unger was able to complete the attack. U-1225 was sunk the next day, October 12, 1944, by an RCAF Catalina, north of the Faeroe Islands. Summary 3 war patrols, 43 sea days 7 ships sunk, 36,124 tons 17 aircraft shot down Kapitaenleutnant Hermann Unger and U-1225 were lost on 12OCT44.
