Default Northwest Passage

Ahoy all,

So, I've just docked at Belchen, off Greenland, after a long trawl through the North Atlantic convoy routes. Its Sept. 1940. All the recent boardtalk about Easter eggs and travelling north has got me thinking...about trying the Northwest passage.

Anyone else ever try this? Is it even possible? Does GWX/SH3 model ice sheets?

I remember previously trying to go as far north as possible over Norway, but I ran into what I presume was an ice sheet at high TC and came-a-cropper.

On a slightly related note, say one was to go to the western/eastern limit of the map, could one 'cross' it?..ie. is the earth modelled as round, or flat? I know the GWX team gave the U-Boats bigger 'fuel' tanks to compensate for the 'flat earth' syndrome, so maybe its not possible.

Cheers,

Very interesting question! Now, to reality: only one German commerce raider made use of the NorthWest Passage with the aid of the USSR.

From my Chronology of World War Two in Europe:

July 3, 1940 – The German auxiliary cruiser Komet sails from Gdynia. Soviet icebreakers accompany Komet through the shipping route north of Siberia into her East Asia operational area.
September 5, 1940 – The German commerce raider Komet reaches the Pacific Ocean.

This trip through ice would be an almost impossible event for a U-boat.

Let us know if you're able to do it.

Will do.

That Soviet icebreaker came up in a documentary I was watching a few months ago, it was very interesting. I'd never heard of it before then.

Isn't the North West passage the one north of Canada?

Yes, you're correct, I was in error calling it the NorthWest Passage in my post.

But, we are talking about the passage through the ice, north of the USSR and Siberia into the Pacific.

I've never gone through the Northwest Passage, but the people in my screenname have!

'Roald' is the first name of the famous Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen, who was the first man to command a ship which went through the Northwest passage. He also commanded the first expedition to reach the South Pole.

'Larsen' is the second* name of Henry Larsen, the second man to command a ship through the Northwest Passage, and the first to go through in two directions. He was a Norwegian-born RCMP officer who commanded the RCMP schooner St. Roch. He was the first to go through West to East and the first to go through in both directions. The St. Roch later became the first ship to circumnavigate North America.

*Well, actually it's his third name. His full name was Henry Asbjörn Larsen.

Oh well, I'm enjoying the cruise anyway.

I'm just entering lancaster sound, weather has been perfect for a week and the sunsets magnificent...though it never really gets too dark, because its still sept.

Nothing but open sea, no sign of any bergs. When I hug the coast every now and then there's a serious amount of tree cover, very forested.

I'll keep an eye out for any suspicious looking norse vikings
