Hi guys,
I've only just started playing SH3 in just the last couple of weeks, and man is this a great game! The last Sub sim I played was Aces of the Deep, so it's been quite some time since I've been under. I've only just started playing campaign mode, starting in 1940 sailing out of St. Lorient in a type VIIb and recently have completed my 6th patrol. This last patrol was by far my most exciting one as I spotted my first ever convoy! Now convoys for some of the veterans out there may be a common occurrence, but this being my first it was really exciting to see so many targets all in one place! 4 - C2's, 3 - C3's, 7-8 small and coastal merchants, and only 2 Flower Corvettes on guard duty! Hot damn! Anyways to make a very long story short, while avoiding multiple depth charge attacks, one very close ramming attempt from one of the Destroyers and one actual ramming from a coastal merchant I surfaced too close to (Don't laugh, I'm still a newb!), over the course of 20 hours I used every torpedo I had in inventory and was able to sink all 3 C3's, 2 small merchants and 3 of the 4 C2's, the last one I didn't go for as it was flying an American flag and this was only April 1941 at this point so I resisted the urge to 'accidentally' sink her as well. I was really happy to have been able to one-shot one of the C3's with a torpedo that hit right behind the engine room, that I'm guessing hit the fuel tanks. Man what a rush! In the end it was something like 50,000 tons went to the deep. The only thing that would have made me happier with this run would have been to try and sink the Destroyers first and then use torpedoes and the 8.8 to down the whole convoy. But unfortunately this wasn't possible as the seas were quite rough and no deck gun was available. Also, it would have been a little sweeter if I was using dud torpedoes, but since I'm still learning I've not had them turned on. I tell ya, I think this game is going to be on my hard drive for quite some time! Hey, while I'm here, I'd like to send a big thanks out to any subsim.com veterans out there for all the valued advice and knowledge (and patience with us new Kauptmans and all our silly questions!) you provide on this site and forum. All of your input is appreciated, gentlemen. It surely is. |

Welcome Mattsville
![]() Have you discovered GWX3 Gold and SH3 Commander yet? Are you playing the game "out of the box"? If the latter, I strongly suggest you download the GWX3 Gold mod and the SH3 Commander mod (both FREE) if you really want to enjoy the game even more! Follow the links on my signature.... ![]()

Although I'm currently playing stock SH3, I do plan on checking out both mods for sure. Before I install them I wanted to come to grips with the stock version as much as possible though. Partly to ease the learning curve somewhat, and also to have a better appreciation of the differences between stock SH3 and GWX3 and Commander. One question? I actually bought SH3 off of Steam (Valve's online distribution portal), and I'm pretty sure that the install paths are different between Valve's version and the Ubisoft boxed version. Have you guys heard of anyone who has the Steam version being able to run GWX3 or Commander successfully? I have a feeling that to run either mod, I'll probably need to to pick up a boxed Ubisoft version first. No problem for me with paying for the game twice actually, from what I've seen so far this game is so good I wouldn't at all mind giving a little "extra" money to the developers for doing such a good job. Sort of a gratuity so to speak. ![]() |

Have not heard of any problems. My copy is from Direct2Drive and I am very pleased with it.
GWX3 and Commander ROCKS. These are deadly. ![]() ![]()

I got my copy off Steam as well but I haven't upgraded to GWX yet (coming to grips with the stock game is enough of a challenge for now).
I found the app folder in the Steam directory... umm... in the "global" or "general" folder. Adding Gramaphone files was a great boon to the experience, see separate thread. On patrol 7, Feb 1940, still heading to my patrol grid off Ireland all out of torps, crew singing lustily to Edith Piaf!

For what it's worth, I've used a couple of minor mods (no crew fatigue and some updated boat textures) and they work OK with the Steam installed SH3 version. Just not sure how that will translate when it comes to GWX or Commander yet. Quote:

A quick bit of advice. In my 'My Documents' folder I created a folder I titled 'SH3 Info'. In it I keep a copy of my current modded setup in a folder I titled 'Data-My Way'. I also keep a copy of the basic patched-to-1.4b Data folder in its own separate folder. This makes it easy to look at the original stock files if I ever need to.
I think if you are using a downloaded version of the game this is more than just a good idea - it's vital.
