I've long used Ottos changes to the dials.cfg file to allow for manual range input but wonder if it is possible to use the stadimeter as it was atually designed in RL.
Can it be activated without Locking a ship or is that hardcoded. Thanks, epower |

Hi epower yes it is, although you do have to have you cross hairs over a target when you start to use the stadimeter. You can't measure the range if the game knows your perioscope isn't pointed at a target, but as long as you are on a target when you start the stadimeter you can use it unlocked.
If you want to enter a range without there being a target, then I don't think that's possible.

Thanks Nisgeis. I had not centered the wire on a target previously but following your rec it works just fine. Excellent.

The 'Lock' function represents something they could do but we can't: hold the periscope on target while we call out "Bearing...mark!" and "Range...mark!", while the XO looks at the stadimeter and range readout from behind and calls back the information while he also writes it down.
If that kind of voice control was possible, I'd agree that the 'Lock' was unrealistic, but since we can't do that I think it's the best we have.
