Default Noob questions.

Hello,

I hope you don't mind me asking these questions.

I am about to buy silenthunter 4, but before i do, i was wondering if anyone could offer some advice.

My system is as follows:

ASUS m2n SLI Deluxe with onboard soundmax HD audio
AMD 64 dual core processor 4800+
2 gig kingston 800 speed RAM
Geeforce 8800GT 512mb
500GB Maxtor 32mb 7200rpm Hard Drive
Thermaltake TR2 500W PSU
Windows XP Pro, Service pack 2.
Directx 9.0c March 2008

Will this be ok for running silent hunter 4, or can i expect to have some problems?

When i buy the game, what patches/updates do i need?

Is there any other general advice you could offer me that will help me run this game?

Thanks in advance,

Keith.

Welcome to a great addiction!

Your system is fine for running SH4.

You will need to patch it to 1.4.

See here for sites that have the patch... http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/t...5/m/1901093545

There is plenty to read here on the forum. Lots of MODS to add to SH4. You are in for a great time. Start out by copying your brand new SH4 1.4 install to a safe folder and change the directory names. That way if you destroy your install due to adding mods you have an easy way to get going again.

Best of luck, ask questions and happy hunting!

Thanks for your help.

Other than the 1.4 patch, are there any other mods or fixes i really should do?

I've never been a big fan of game mods, as they can be more trouble than they are worth imo. But if there are any mods you can really recommend, what would they be?

What about this problem with vibrating ships in the dock i've been reading about or the torps going off to the left?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks,

Keith.

Hi keith,

On your system specs, no problems. I have a very similar system and the game is silky smooth with everything maxed out.

For you other question, I asked a similar one a few weeks back and got lots of good answers and links. So here is a link to my original post. Enjoy!

You will have problems with sound unless you add a sound card. This will up your frame rate and prevent glitches and freezes while your microprocessor is seeking out the proper sound. Other than that, you're good to go!

These mods shoud be treated the same as "Safe Sex" - the fewer, the better, and you don't end up with a bad [crotch] itch that you cannot get rid of for the rest of your life.

These MODs are [crotch] itch free. No problems, no crashes - EVER - through all the SH4 patches, and you can be assured that your main torpedeo attached at your end, does not get hurt, bent or yanked trying to fix a problem because of a recent SH4 patch:

360 DBP Imperial - cannot sub around without it.

Green Lamp 1.5 mod - love it.

Captain Midnights more CBS news sound mod - I avoid time compression just to hear the latest news from the war front at night, surfaced, recharing the batteries. Find this mod VERY relaxing and enjoyable - deluxe - the MOD author should get a Nobel Award for putting it together.

Classic Scopes

All the above NEVER gave me problems ever.

IF you add more, you risk losing your dingle-himmer and might suffer going off course.

Just to the right of your donkey-wong-hung-low. Welcome aboard!

You should run the game for a while without any mods to get an idea of how the vanilla version is

I'll second that excellent advice from McBeck. Very good to get a feel of stock SH4 so you will have a better idea later of what - if anything - you'd like to change.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks everyone for your help.
I will buy a sound card ASAP.

I have got the hang of the manual targeting system, but i'm having a few problems getting the angle of bow correct. I know how to get the correct angle from the map, but i don't really understand how to put that accurate reading into the computer.
I started a career, but one thing i noticed is that i can't use the radar. It won't switch at the on off switch on the radar and tool bar buttons for the radar won't work either. All i can do i go to the radar station, but it won't let me use it.

Thanks,

Keith.

Thats would be because you dont actually have radar yet. It should become available as an upgrade later in the war. If you start a career in 41 the only thing available is the air search radar which doesnt have a screen of its own and runs all the time while surfaced. It only detects aircraft.

The only thing i would like to change about the game so far is the torp loading times. I would like to have the loading time set to realistic in the carrer game play options, but it would be nice if they could be loaded faster. It just seems to take too long at the moment.

Is there a mod or a way to change the loading times so they are faster, but i can still have it set to realistic in the options?

Thanks,

Keith.

That all depends on your style of play. For me torpedo loading time is not an issue after I launch my torpedos I usually go deep and silent move out of the area and then spend time reloading the tubes.

Then come back up finish off stragglers or more often than not do the end-around to come back in for another attack. But someone else will chime in with more info for you I am sure.

Happy Hunting!

I've just finished my first patrol. I have everything set on realistic, other than having external camera view and map plotting set to on.

I sunk 9 ships, two of them quite large war ships and one small sub killer. I was quite pleased to hit the small one with one of the three torps i sent its way, as it was moving quite fast and i didn't have much time to get set up for an attack. I thought if i can hit that i can hit anything.
I got a patrol star medal when i got back.

This is the best and most interesting game i've ever played.
