Default Just installed - question about underwater video?

I don't particularly like the underwater environment in SH4 compared to SH3:

(1) Can I get rid of the refraction water shimmering and just see crisp images?

(2) Can I clear the water to increase viewing distance underwater? I have a mod to for SH3 to clear up water and I also use SH3 Commander to further increase view distance.

Thanks.

I'll go along with you on the fake shimmer, which is only a factor if you're looking from air into water or from under water to something above the surface. If you're below, the view should be rock steady and someone who should remain nameless decided to go "artistic" on us. If we're going artistic, I want 60 knot torpedoes and 40 knot cuties, and radar ranging to the TDC from the periscope head and a yellow submarine.

As far as water clarity goes, the water as you see it in SH4 is far more prevalent than clear water through which you can see for miles. I've seen a wide range of water clarity in SH4 and think they did a pretty good job there. With Ducimus' evil airplanes out there, I've been hoping for poor water visibility lately.

This is one thing I have liked about SH4 since the beginning, even with stock, with ROW it is that much better, but in the end, to each his own

Yes you can fix that underwater distortion. It's a simple change to a line in a cfg file. I did it. I don't remember what it was...but someone should come along soon to this thread and tell you...

I too find the underwater refraction effect quite annoying (as I know it's not real).

I did a search and in the SH4 MODS Forum, I found the following post from WilhelmTell:

You can get rid of that effect easily.
Open Underwater.pfx in your SilentHunter4 \Data\Filters folder with notepad.
Set the intensity of UnderwaterDispMap to 0.000 .
That's all. You can play now without underwater distortion ...

I haven't tested that this works yet. Let us know! Nisgeis.

That did it. Excellent!

Any way to eliminate crew transparency on the bridge? Thanks.

I think the 'Casper Effect' is a game engine limitation. I could be wrong though.

You can correct the issue by disabling the environmental effects, but you won't have transparent water anymore.

The Devs have stated that there is no fix for this issue because of the way the crew is rendered into the scene.

Default Welcome to SH4!

Welcome to SH4 by the way! Feel free to poke around and ask questions, we're all friendly here. Just two things we ask:

Leave some targets for us.

Please refrain from laughing at the Japanese ASW forces. They're doing the best they can.

Thanks for the welcome.

I just installed the basic game and precreated two other environments for TM and RFB, but I haven't started yet with installing the mods.

Is there any tool for editting your ships crew like SH3 Commander? If not, is there any documentation on awards and qualification and how one can text edit the file? What USN award is the equivalent of the Iron Cross? (zero fatigue)

It seems volumetric fog provides transparent water and solid crew, if the environmental effects is off. At least ghost crew appears OK. Try it.

I was wondering the same thing. I was taking screenshots as my first patrol left Pearl Harbor, and was a bit startled to notice that the bridge was crewed by undead.

It's the ghost of Davy Jones. Bwhahaha!

When I used Sober's Super Mod the shimmering was so bad that it distroted the sub's shape, like morphing.
