Default USN Fleet Boat vs. U-Boot: Multiplayer Matchup

With the up and coming U-Boot addon I was wondering if we could have mock battles with our friends on the other side of this forum. It would be kind of interesting to see who would come out on top. Here are some factors which may tip the scales. However as you will see, the scales could tip either way.

Radar:

USN radar was far superior to German radar (PPI, detection range, etc.). However the U-Boot has the ability to detect radar while the Fleet boat does not (at least in SHIV probably not in reality). So these two things could even out.

Sonar:

Both sides seem to have similar sonar capabilities however the USN sonar equipment is much more user freindly. You get a course and bearing repeater plus other little gadjets which come in handy. Couple this with the ability to feed data into the USN position keeper TDC and you may have the edge.

Torpedos:

Now here is the interesting one. Both sides have similar torpedo technologies but for sub-on-sub only one techlology really comes into play. Unless you catch your foe on the surface by surprise, once both subs dive the acoustic homing torps only matter. I think the USN would come out on top here since the German homer has a limited depth since it was designed for surface ships while FIDO was designed to follow a sub all the way down to the deep. Although, throw the XXI into the mix and the FIDO is useless since the XXI can easily out run it.

See, I think the whole thing would turn into a nail biting cat and mouse game. Granted there are a whole list of technologies that arent even modeled in the sim which could tip the scales even further. Unfortunately we need to stick to what is available to us in the game engine which actually makes the senario pretty balanced.

So, whatta ya think?

I guess they should have made SH4 an open boat where we run around inside and shoot each other a 1000 times. They seem to handle those games with numerous patches. --Longam UBI SHIV Forums

A sad day has dawned...
