Default SH3 Commander - officers' faces won't show up & more

In my last career I encountered a problem - a "photo" of one of my five officers didn't want to show up in the SH3C "crew management" interface. In game it was all right. I thaught it's just a temporary problem connected to this particular career, but now I started a new career, and the problem occured again - two officers (Oberfahnrich's) do not have photos (like the petties and regulars), so I can't change their look. That hurts, as I play SH3 in a role-play manner, I like to "know my crew personally" so I always do my best so that every officer has it's own individual face.

I've never used any mods fiddling with the officers faces.

I tried to fix (change) the faces manually and prepared a "crew_config_VII_1.cfg" file for use with the new career. But I'm not able to find the code-line that changes the "photos". :/

Help needed.

Hi there mate,
If you are using Mi Mod U-boat 1.2 There is a
wierd conflite betwin mi officer faces and SH3Comm.

I still don't understand why it does that since mi
Tga graphics have exactely the same profile as
the original Officer faces Tga files, but if you see
SH3Commander even does the same with same
original Officer faces, you can check that by trying
to change the officer picture on the SH3Comm.
crew management screen !

I am trying to fix that and it will be released with the
U-boat 1.2 patch !

As I said before, your images have alpha channels whereas the stock images do not. It's the alpha channel that upsets SH3Cmdr. Remove it and SH3Cmdr is happy.

The function was written with the stock file structure in mind - alpha channels were not considered because, well, I couldn't imagine why they would be added when the stock images didn't have them to begin with (to be frank, their possible addition didn't even cross my mind).

So no weird conflict; straight forward and simple.

Hi mate,

I know you've said that, But I have been checking
this and SH3Comm. does the same with some stock
Officer files, not with all but only with some of them,
I am making a test on this subject removing mi
Officer faces Alphas, and will report to you if ok,
However when I checked the original Officer files
on Adobe P. CS2 he shows Alpha Channels on the files,
if check them you'll see some Transparent Part bellow
each officer tga file and that must go on the image
the only way for the file to be acepted in the game
with that transparent part is by making the Alpha Channel
and then save it as Tga file...

Any way I will check it out again and see what I can come up with!

Issue fixed !


The U-boat 1.2 faces will show up on SH3Commander on
the next incomming patch !

Will have to test them in game yet but at least in the
SH3Comm. they show without any problems, removed the
Alpha channel and it works fine now !

Lets see what happends ingame !:hmm:

Ok guys, back on topic: the problem is with new officers. Usually after a patrol I dismiss the highest rank officer and hire a new one, Oberfahnrich. I do it after coming back from patrol, without reloading the game (so that I can adjust his look, randomise name, and assign needed qualifications in SH3 Commander between patrols). And none of 3 new hired officers have a photo in SH3 Commander now.

Another thing is the qualifications of the new hired officer. Originally he had just a "watchman" skill, but when I exited the game and launched SH3 Commander, he had three qualifications instead of his own one - exactly the same as one of my old officers. That starts to scare me a bit, as I wouldn't like my crew file went totally wild in the middle of career.

? Below the officers cfg. The first 2 are ok, the last 3 have no faces, the last one being just hired. Any tips would me more than welcome.

Man - how you can dismiss an officer which is with you from 1-st patrol?
That is an element of RPG - when your crew takes experience with
you, with each patrol completed
For me the greatest catastrophy during patrol is loss of just one crewman - when just one matrose dies, there is only exit and loading savegame.
Nothing can replacing a crewman after 10 patrols
However i think that crew takes experience too fast - someone could
make a mod which will randomise gained experience.

I understand you point very good. I'd like to keep my men from the very start to end with me... but you know, unless I get Knight's Cross with Gold Oak Leaves, Swords And Diamonds, it's not me whi decides about my crew when in base. BdU has his own plans and I can do nothing about it. He could have all my crew transfered if he wanted, but fortunately he usually takes only like 1 officer, 1-2 petties and 2-4 sailors per patrol. Some of them just retire, some go to other boats to share their experience with newbies, some have accidents.

The "dismissed" officer was a true sea wolf compared to me, with 7 battle patrols done (and me 0). He was assigned to U-95 only for her first patrol under my command, to be transfered immediately on finish. If he was to stay aboard, it'd feel strange... much older one, the same rank as me, much more experience, and it's me who commands? No.

Oh - i understand - you have enabled an option ''REALISTIC CAREER'' in
SH3 Commander That is your choice and i respect this.
But be prepared for sudden end of game when your career will finish after
completing about 20 patrols. [I don't remember how much patrols exactly]
There will be always possibllity for resign from SH3 Commander and continue to end of war

O... lutzow jest z Polski. Szczęka mi wła¶nie opadła, jak mogłem przez tyle czasu tego Gdańska nie zauważyć. :P Odzdrawiam oczywi¶cie.

As to the realistoc career length, I've used it forever and I know it's effects. My first GWX 2.0 career has just ended prematurely a few days ago after just 7 patrols... But what to do, what BdU says is an order...
