Default Ati 9600xt VS. 9800xt

Will there be a noticable increase in frame rates in 3d games if I shift from a 9600xt(256mb) to a 9800xt(256mb) when coupled with a amd athlon 2400+ and 2 gigs of ram?

OR:

Should I just chuck the upgrading scheme and save up for a new coumputer?:hmm:

Would there be a noticable increase...yes. Does it make any sense to do what you're suggesting? No.

Both the 9600XT and the 9800XT are obsolete five year old pieces of technology. Right now, it makes sense to get an entirely new PCIe equipped system with a dual core processor. If you don't want to ditch the rest of your computer (which is seriously underpowered by today's standards in the CPU department), I would suggest something more recent than the 9800XT...something like an X1950 Pro for your AGP slot.

Thanks for the response JSL.

I will have to do a lot of research once again since my computer is going on 5 and everything has changed.

Looks like it is time to build a new computer again.

Pretty much in today's world, you're looking at either a Core 2 Duo or a Core 2 Quad with at least 2GB of DDR2 800 (PC2-6400) RAM. You're also going to want to check out SATA-II HDDs and DVD burners. If you have no beefs with nvidia, I'd suggest their 512MB 8800GT for graphics as it has the best price/performance. If you do have a problem with nvidia and want to support ATi instead, go for the HD 3870 (which is just a touch slower but generally comparable to the 8800GT).
