Default Please help with this request

Now that the tools are in yards im having a difficult time plotting an interception point for merchants or convoys, I used to use the method of 1nm = 1knot and could easily plot a course and know at what speed to travel at to get ther in time for a setup, but, now the tools are in yards and throws me off completely. When i use the protractor to draw my radius it is a huge circle because im not sure what yard will represent my speed or a merchants speed in miles. Please can someone show me how to use the tools now in yards to plot an interception course, prefer screenshots like the old methods showed when it was in km. I think 4000yrds is equal to 1 mile but my circle radius is huge now on my map and very confusing. I think many here would benefit by some ways of doing this with the new yards improvement, please help me and others understand better, thanks all, this is a great community for help and i hope someone can come to the rescue for us who are not so good at this, thanks again and a merry christmas to you all.

Default here you go!

One nautical mile is close enough to spit the distance from 2000 yards. Your ruler and compass measure in yards up to 5 miles and then by nautical yards. Just take the number of yards, divide by 2 and slide that decimal three places left and you have just converted to nautical miles. Example: 5200 yards / 2 = 2600. slide the decimal three places left and you have 2.6 nautical miles. You can do that really quickly in your head without any aids whatsoever. Then you can plot the old way!

This is the way i did do it and it worked great, could someone explain it to me using the new yards system in 1.4. Im sorry for the noob question, im not that good at numbers and all, but did find it easy to use kms to represent knots and plot my speed to intercept. Again sorry im a noob but trying to learn as much as i can, thanks for your patience.

1 nm is very close to 2000 yards. So, when drawing your circle, dived by 2000 to get your speed in knots if the circle is small enough to be in yards.

is still think people are over complicating a basic skill take your time listen to which way the bearing is moving if on sonar and when using the scope check which way the contact is going then alter course to intercept you dont need to be exact get ahead of the group and let rip with the torps. just today on my 4th patrol i came across a task group to the north east of me heading south i intercepted using no tools and sank 2 fleet carriers and a escort carrier for 49850 tonnes i run the game on 100 % realism ad havent needed to use any of the tools or attack chart

Ok i get it now, took me a while but thanks for the help. When using "no map contact updates" do you guys go to periscope depth when contact reported and listen for bearing and judge heading by marking with pencil? have not un-checked this box for the moment and was wondering the best method for finding and sinking marus. Any tips would be great, again thanks all. Rockin Robbins

Even with no map updates, a reported contact will show on your map ... along with time of report and general heading/speed information. The easiest way to intercept the contact (for me, anyway) is:
  • Draw a course line (e.g. "Course: NE" = 045) from the contact point, outward.
  • Match the contact's reported speed.
  • Set your heading to intercept the contact's course line.
  • Make sure your course line to intercept is shorter than the contact's.
If your course line is too long, either adjust it or speed up to compensate.

There is no need to worry about "yards" when plotting an intercept unless your contact is less than 5 nm away. All distances will be in nautical miles and all speeds will be in knots. Ergo, you can even calculate how long it will take you (or the contact) to reach the intercept point (distance/speed).

For sonar contacts, I use a different method.
