Here's my thinking on the matter: the radarman can monitor two separate radar systems (SD and SJ) at the same time, and of course they both have their own attributes. Now, why can't that be done with the sonarman? Theoretically, we could create a new passive sonar sensor that works only when on the surface and has a shorter range than the submerged sonar. It would then be monitored at the same time as the "old" hydrophone and thus solve the problem of submerged vs. surfaced sonar contacts.
So, can this be done? |

I tried this before (it's in my thread regarding changing the ai visual sensors) and it didn't seem to work to have 2 visuals for AI ships. Haven't tried it with hydrophones, and haven't tried for a sub.

I tried doing something similar in SH3 with active sonar (I wanted to model 147 sonar accurately). I could never get it to work. I think the problem is that each platform has a limit of one sensor type. Radar actually has two types, surface and air, and that's why the radarman can monitor both of those systems simultaneously. I wonder what "SurfaceFactor" settings would have on passive systems?
I plan to mess with sonar settings some more in the near future (mostly AI though). I want to finish another little job I have started though. Could be a while...

Ive always had a suspiction that SD radar, is a retooled RWR from SH3. Just a suspiction though, ive never really examined it closely.

^ that would make a lot of sense. Note that I even tried adding additional visual nodes tot he ship dat files. No dice.
