As I was staring at an old-lookin' freighter in my periscope, I thought to myself that it would've looked even more old and broken down had it been emitting a dense cloud of smoke from it's stack...
I know nothing about modding, but...there is smoke in the game...and there are ships in the game...would it be possible to make ships have visible exhaust via a mod?

I suppose the current smoke could be darkened but I'm guessing that there is only one file that governs what the smoke effects from the ships look like and by changing it to make old steamers have blacker smoke you might be changing it for all the ships.

ROW contains smoke that is a bit thicker. The problem is as the smoke gets thicker, the slow downs of the game can start happening. Need a happy medium. Currently, the ROW mod allows me to see the smoke way off in the distance.
