If it's the compass tool I think that you're talking about, it's reversed so that when you plot a course while using it you can read off the course heading on the tool - try this - if you plot a course straight down (due south), you'll note that the line from the plot pointer to your sub goes through due south on the little compass tool - if you pull the line down and to the right (i.e., going SE), you'll note that the line from the plot pointer to your sub now goes through some SE reading on your tool. Therefore, if you want to plot a course that heads 240 degrees, you can do it using the tool 'cause you drag the line down and left till it goes through 240 degrees on your tool. Simple once you play with it a bit.
