Jagged Wake under ship’s Hulls

Greetings! This is my first post so I'll try to brief. Not really sure if this is the right place for this post, but since you guys are are Mod Experts maybe you can answer this question. Or perhaps point me in the right Direction.

Has anyone experience the follow problem with wakes not displaying correctly or showing very jaggy? Or is this normal? It almost looks like the merchant ship is sailing though breaking white ice at times. However, when I use the event camera to view my own U-Boat there is no wake distortion at all.

I have tried to run the sh3 on different resolutions and it still occurs. This does not appear to be a temperature issue because this problem will happen on start with the video card running cool.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Currently I’m running the following: Sh3 +1.04 patch, GWX 1.3, Authentic Uboat Off Faces, GWX - Lite Harbor Traffic, GWX - Main Movie - "Das Boot", Gwx - Reduced Positive Buoyancy, RB_Sh4_Effects for SH3 3_2_21 and GWX - Lowered DF Antennas
System Spec’s:
Windows XP sp2
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
2 Gig of Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra (latest drivers)
Game resolution: Default (1024x768)

I am having the same problem with an 8800GTS (640 MB). Playing at high levels of AA and AF seems to help a little bit but it is still not totally resolved.

It looks like a reflection vs. particles problem, never suffered it though.

The jagged border you see is probably the distorted reflection/refraction of the ship, there are numerous ships (even stock ones) that have reflection problems, but I never seen them popping thru the shipwake.

Thanks for the replies!

I have also tried the following: Fresh reinstall of the sh3 plus mod, Removed nvidia graphic drivers and reinstalled them, and updated pretty much every driver on the machine. But I'm still seeing the problem.

I played around with the graphic setting but they didn't make any noticeable change. So in the end I left all the defaults for the nvidia graphics control panel. AA and the like are all set to default application controlled.

I did notice that problem happends more frequently when it's a clear sunny day with hardly any wind. I do not see it ever when it's storming. Also, I seem to have a problem with the moon and sun, if I look for a time they also have spurts of distortion.

However, I have not tried reinstalling DirectX, I will give this a go

It just annoys me that I spent a ton of cash for the 8800 Ultra and have display problem. I love this game and the addition of all these mod has made it outstanding, I may just have to ignore the problem.

What Nvidia settings are you using? You should be able to max out with that system.

My settings are at

Anisotropic filtering 8x
Antialiasing settings 4x
Antialiasing transparency MultiS.
Texture Filtering Anisotropic mip filter ON
Texture Filtering Anisoftropic Sample ON
Texture Filtering Negatvie LOD bias Clamp
Texture Filerting Quality High Performance
Texture filtering trilinear opt. off
Triple buffering off
Vertical sync User application "on for SH3"

I have a feeble system compared to yours.

Basics;
Intel 3.2GHz-D HT 800MHz
Intel D865PERLX
2Gigs ram OCZ titanium Duals
XFX 7600GT AGP 256m
Sound blaster Elite X-Fi
LG-L204WT 20.1 wide LCD at 1680x1050

Do a search on my name and see my quality pics as proof.
Frames average about 37 to 45 and harbours sometimes hicups.

Its possible that your system even though highend, its components don't like each other. or it could be a firmware issue. You can check for the latest firmware for your Motherboard and Video card.

Anyhow Goodluck.

Wolfehunter-

I will need to check out my nvidia settings when I get home. But I'm almost positive that they are all set to the default that nvidia install with. I believe it's application controlled for most options. :hmm:

I did a search for your name and found some really nice quality pictures. What resolution are you currently running for Sh3?

My mb bios is up to date, but I will have to check on the firmware on my video card.

Many thanks for the help

Setting your VC to more of a performance side you may see jagged edges while leaning to the quality side setting would give you a more rounded look..improve the smoothness hope thats simple enough...

In my advanced settings it has many game applications already preset...SHIII happens to be one of em...perhaps looking in advanced may give a better clue

Yes, I was messing around with that last night. It sure did look good when when I cranked it all the way up but then my frame rate was cut in half, but still very smooth unless I went into a busy harbor then it drop to about 60 fps. There were no jaggy edges on the ship, they looked great. But the wakes was still a little jaggy, but not near as bad.

I checked that advanced setting also. It had a pre-defined on for SHIII but I was not if that was actually taking effect since I was running gwx super mode? :hmm:

The setting in the preset were pretty generic. Everything was application controlled. And there was an option to add a new .exe application I may try that.

Koondawg what resolution are you currently playing in? :hmm:

I messed with that last night also. I liked 1280x1024 but caused a little bit of distortion/bolded on the text on the nav map so I switched back to 1024x768.

Thanks! Glad to be here. I've played Sh3 every since it came out. However, I made the mistake of buying SH4, uninstalled it the same day and went back to Sh3.

A loyal fan of SH3 + GWX!

Hello, and welcome mcmst26! I'm in a similar position to you, only I haven't bought SH4

From the screenshots I believe I have exactly the same display issue, and I'm running an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB on drivers that are probably 18 months old now. I'll have to try to get a screenshot of it tomorrow and see if it comes out exactly the same, but I often see a flickering effect along the edge of a ship on the waterline.

I might be wrong, but I think it only happens when viewing ships that are a long way from my sub's location. If I use the free view and fly maybe 5+ km to view a ship, or if I use the views on the , and . keys to jump to faraway ships, I think it's more apparent. If I look at a ship nearby I don't remember seeing it. Will have to check this more tomorrow too.

If the above is true, it's perhaps something inherent to the game rather than a driver setting. To give better performance maybe the game reduces the quality of the rendering between ocean & any ship that is far away from you. The base point is always your sub, not the camera position. Just a theory anyway... will try to look into it more after work tomorrow

I do see that in all of your screenshots the watch officer called the ships out at long range, though.
