Default Best PC for EUR 800

Okay, I am on the lookout for a PC (price excl. monitor; but with Windows). Home made is not an option. Upgrading neither, because my home rig is moving to the office.
  • Athlon or Intel ?
  • At least 2 GIG RAM; that's obvious
  • Around 300 GB HD seems enough for me. I'm still on 40 GB now (not hardly enough obviously)
  • Vid card: ATI or nVidia ? Cant decide on the reviews I read.
My games: I rarely play anymore but when I do it's a bit of the oldies I once played pretty intensively, and some new:
  • SH3 (love to see GWX @max graph settings !)
  • Sub Command (got no time for DW anyway)
  • EEAH/EECH (How could I forgot to mention first time ?)
  • Virtual Skipper 4 (ditto)
  • BOB 2
  • OFF (WW1 of Microsoft CFS)
  • Total Air War
  • Falcon 4
  • LOMAC
  • Pacific Fighters
  • Operation Flashpoint (like to have a go at some mods finally)
  • Nascar 2003 (papyrus' last)
  • Richard Burns (RIP) rally
  • GPL & some mods
Wishlist for as far as I am aware of developments:
  • SH 4 obviously !! (@ almost max settings if possible)
  • A Falklands' War combat flight sim; forgot the name (when reviews are good)
  • Black Shark (heli) and next dedicated sims in that franchise (seems the Apache is coming up HI FI like never b4 !!)
Thanks for advice

PS perhaps Dutch can point me to a store. However, the ones I know Mycom, Paradigit, Vobis, Computerland, and a few more dont seem to have a good enough system for that price. I could wait for another 6 months if that'd be wiser, no prob. Better deals all the time.

Put GTR2 oin your wishlist! I recommend it seeing you have Nascar 2003 (me too!) and RBR (me too) and GPL (I once had it installed, but see no reason anymore to do it these days).

No strategy title? (frown)

I just picked exactly the current low-range system from Tom's Hardware, and can only recommend it:

Hope that helps

Strategy: No thanks. I can't stand micro management.

I would like to play Steel Beasts but I am a realist: No time.

Thanks, I am going to look into that.

What it comes down to, is I would be grateful if someone would 'simply' give me a full list of optimum specs adding up to around EUR 800

Okay, I don't normally recommend magazines, as I used to work for a paper and i know that the reviews are often tied to the ad revenue, and that can put the zipper on reviews being honest, but I've found that PC Advisor (magazine) bucks that trend and is invariably honest enough to call a spade a spade and not worry whom it upsets regardless of their advertisers. So I'd really recommend checking their 'Best buy charts' at the back of the magazine, making particular note of their speed test results. They have several price categories too, so it's not all about 'money no object' PCs either.

Thanks Chock,

I will consider that if 'instant gratification' here would not happen.
Not sure tho' that magazine is in store over here.

In that case here is their website, with what they recommend:
