Default [TEC] Conning Tower Refits

When do subs recieve conning tower refits in stock SH4? As far as the career game goes I'm running stock SH4 but with Taters new layers 0.78 and I've had the same 'bath tub' conning tower way past the date they were removed in RL. How does this work in the game? If I start a new career past the refit date I have the newer cut down tower but if I run the game from before that I just seem to keep the same old tower.

I've heard talk about this being offered as an option... something that occassionally pops up instead of the usual "end patrol" or "re-arm and resume" options maybe? But in 200+ hours of playing this game in career mode, I have never once been offered this option nor found any way to make it happen short of getting another boat by accepting a new command.

Unfortunately, if this is the way it is, it means we will never experience the progression from early war bath tub to various mid and late war mods on any one class within a single career. And when I say unfortunately, I mean that. The boat upgrades were something I really looked forward to in SH3... sometimes that alone being the reason for continuing a career.

Not saying it would be a simple task, but it could be modded.

There's already a mod that has changed some of the big guns on the Jap warships from one type to another.

If the conning tower and sub body are one piece models and cannot be seperated, it would have to be altered in 3Dsmax. But, several versions of the same class of boat could be made with different conning towers, and swapped during the game in port.

Not sure of the exact method of swapping as I've only thought about this for 30 seconds now, but I bet it can be done.

In all the time I've played SH4 I've never been offered a new command, a tower refit, nothing! Its a real immersion killer to still be cruisng around with an old 'bath-tub' tower in the middle of 1943, when I know for a fact that boats got new tower additions/refits practically everytime they returned to base.

The devs really screwed up on this IMHO, why change the ability to buy upgrades through renown points when it worked so well in SH3? Doesn't leave much incentive to gain renown points if all you can buy is a new DG (and don't get me started on the bug that stops you changing its position, unless your willing to leave it un manned!).

If I knew enough about programming etc I'd have a go at modding a solution to this. Hopefully if patch 1.04 becomes a reallity the devs will have sorted this out! But frankly I'm not holding my breath at this point.
