The most powerful vacuum bomb, they say.
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...c=worldupdates http://today.reuters.com/news/articl...USSIA-BOMB.xml It is ecologically clean, they also say. Logcial, if no human activity is around anymore.

Isn't the explosive speed significantly lower for FAEs, or have I just been missing out on developments since the last world war?
I wonder how heavy this bomb is. If it can't be carried by tactical aircraft or missiles than it can't be much use. (for all I know it could be feather weight compared to nukes of the same rating!) I'm sure it's green credentials will bring a reassuring, warm feeling to the harts of all who are to perish by it. /strangelove blog

Think of the home use of a small version of one of these.
1. Set the timer. 2. Go out the front door. Close it behind you. 3. Wait for the boom sound. 4. Presto! House vacuumed and cleaned. No muss, no fuss! ![]() |

The weapon was delivered by a Tu-160, which is the Russian counterpart to the B-1.

It was only my suggestion about TU-22 since I don't have much info on that bomb. Maybe our Air Forces would buy some more TU-160's since they now can carry these bombs and can be used not only as a part of strategic force. But I think that our guys would develop something smaller to be carried by TU-22's or even by Su-34's as TU-160's are more expensive to build and to mantain in order.

If this is just a "provincial" weapon then does Russia have much to show off about above the technical feat?

An air raid by a flight of Tu-160 with according missiles is a thread that would give me a headache if I were a military commander.
I think this FAE bomb serves two purposes. first to make a waving gesture at the West, and second to be eventually used against Islamic separatists, terrorists and in local wars in the southern provinces. Also, eventually, to bust bunkers with nuclear research facilities - you know the scenario. Beyond that latter purpose, Russian generals tend to act with lesser sense for subtleties than their Western counterparts. One can take that as a criticism, or a compliment - depends on your perspective. the Tu-160, by looks, reminds of the B1, but it is much heavier than the B-52 (!), with a maximum take off weight exceeding that of the B52. It is equipped with terrain-following radar, and thus the conclusion that it can act in very high altitudes as well as close to the ground, approaching targets by masking its presence behind terrain features. The White Swan, as the plane is called in Russian, can carry a maximum total of 40 tons in weapons load (although under operational conditions it is a safe bet to assume that most commanders would prefer a lighter weapons load not to totally cripple agility of the plane). definitely a thread to be taken serious.

Didn't a flight of Blackjacks sneak past US/Canadian/NATO radar sometime last year?

I'm questioning if it is a true FAE. FAE's put themselves out after a certain amount of Fuel / air mixture - it ceases to exist about the time it exists, so the resulting explosion can never happen if it is too big. I beleive this limit is about 2000 lbs.
