Ok Scratching My head . When you rescue a downflyer . How do you pick this guy up .. Stupid bot just bobs in the water exposing my boat too airattacks !!

Train your binoculars on him and when the "Rescue" icon (looks like a life preserver) illuminates, click on it.

You can only rescue allied pilots.
