Multiplayer problems

My bro' and I are having problems getting the multiplayer working. We have both set the ports as per the manual. We also have the SH3 ports open. When he tries to host he gets the 999 latency probloem, and I can't Join the game. If I try to host, I get a decent latency figure, and he gets the Join Game, but when he does there's a pause then he gets Session No Longer Available. We can both join other games on the server. What are we missing?
