Default Are carriers immune to the deckguns?

I ran into a japanese fleet carrier convoy, went under and did some potshots. I got lucky and sank all the escorts but ran out of fish.

So I came up to the surface to face the japanese fleet carrier and its escort carriers give it some artillery action. I emptied my entire arsenal into the carrier and not a single hole. I cleared the deck of aircraft though. No list no nothing. I want to say it was a shokaku. The little escort carriers went right under with 20 or so shots. I even tried ramming it.

Are they overarmored?

Do you seriously think a 3" or 4" gun would sink a fleet carrier?

I'd rank that as physically impossible!

Though if anything, I'd suggest aiming for the waterline or just below (manually if you want it badly)

You are attacking a tank with a toothpick. Use torpedoes, and if you have none, pack it in and go home.

A 4/50 is indeed a popgun BUT.........100 shells should account for _something_ . Some fires or a list or SOMETHING!

I survived cause I'm an _ace of the pacific_ fool!

Plus... I think the japanese were having a bad day with the atrocious weather and all, they couldnt shoot straight but I was manning the gun all by myself and sank an escort carrier and a whole bunch of DD's (those with torpedoes though)

And the carrier don´t shot back ?? :hmm: some thing could be wrong if not.

All carriers have a lot of AA and sometimes small guns, that can shoot and sunk a boat easily or kill the deck crew.Or launch a bomber or fighter loaded with bombs and machineguns. The fleet class submarine are not a battleship.

Remember the main tactic for a submarine, avoid scorts and sunk main targets or warships.

A carrier is very difficult to replace, but not a 1000 ton destroyer.

Well, they'll have to replace a whole bunch of them now

Actually, I stopped playing for a while after this incident waiting for the 1.1 patch. Either because of the weather or the fact that a DD basically depth charged itself in the 20 m deep water, the AI decided to ignore me after the DC incident. I came up and sailed around and decided to take advantage of the situation and get some reknown which is when I encountered the deck gun bug aftermoentioned.

sometimes, the ai forgets about you

Doubtful. There are real life stories of battleships and carriers being torpedoed and continuing to truck on like nothing happened. They have lots of compartments that can be shut off in order to contain flooding.

I think you're gonna need to bring bigger ammo to this party.

I severely damaged a Kongo with 3 fish (used all my remaining fish on RTB from patrol). Went deep, and the TF moved on leaving Kongo to fend for herself (she was no longer moving). So i figured, WTF, weather is terrible, I'll surface a decent distance away, and se what happens with the deck gun. I came up went to flank, then started shooting. BB doesn't shoot back.

I order back 2/3, and head towards her, shooting. I parked close enough that I ordered my crew to shoot and I watched as they didn't miss a single round (I was that close). No return fire at all.

Clearly the larger ships are just for looks combat wise. That or they are set to "poor" or something. One other possibility---they are set not to engage subs at al. This might make sense, imagine if all the AAA started shooting at once, it's make harbor traffic seem trivial in terms of FR drop.

Yeah, I don't care how many 4" shells you lob at a carrier, the Jap main-line carriers were built on battlecruiser and battleship hulls. What you did was like Tom Hanks in "Saving Private Ryan", shooting a .45 at a Tiger tank. -

Not to say doing damage is impossible, but all it's going to be is cosmetic.

Does seem to be something weird about the damage models, last night I entered Hiroshima harbor on a photo recon mission. Late afternoon, and a rainstorm that was more like a monsoon. Visibility was so bad I couldn't see anything so I just started crusing around at periscope depth hoping to find something to photograph.

After a while, I saw a couple searchlights sweeping back and forth and headed over toward it. Turned out to be a Fubuki DD at anchor. Anchored a little way further off was a Shokaku class carrier. I crept in close enough to take a picture of the Shokaku and got the "Mission Complete" message.

Then I decided to get "daring" and see if I could take out the Shokaku and still get away. I backed off to about 600 yds and put a single torp into her just forward of the island. Good solid hit but no smoke, no flames, no explosion. But in seconds she was listing 20 degrees and within 2 minutes capsized.

The whole time I was keeping an eye on the DD but she never moved! Just kept sweeping the searchlights in my general direction. Guess she was getting up steam.

So I maneuvered into position to attack the DD, fired a torp, good hit midships, and nothing!! Not even a list! Put another into the bow and again not even a list! Third torp into the stern and she's just laughing at me.

Go figure, seems that 1 torp should have taken out the DD, and the carrier should have needed at least 3!

Default something about harbors

I Swear ships docked in harbors have a totally random either impenetrable or tissue paper damage model. If there is a ship it should be a ship not scenery!

I vaguely remember reading about a US fleet sub that actually shelled a Japanese carrier - this was years ago and I can't remember the source - not sure if I misunderstood the info, or if it was fictional, or what. I wonder if anyone else has more information.

I dont know if its modeled or not but Mk14's were notoriusly flakey in shallow water.
