Are there any settings I can tweak to get a finer scale on the ruler on the nav map? I'm trying to use it to calculate contact speeds but it's a bit hit and miss, especially when you want to measure the distance over a short time.

it was designed that way on purpose, in order to keep us from be too precise. Oddly, we are being hindered by the devs by handicapping a tool actually used at the time for that very function. On top of that, we still dont have a reliable way to determine speed because the chrono function is missing...and its even more precise and easy button than using the ruler and bearings in the first place. Go figure!

Another thing Ive noticed is the graphical scale indicator on the nav map is always at some bizzare incraments like 12.47 mi.
I suppose its a carry over from being programmed in metric then converted to imperial ![]() |

Speedy response - thank you.
Well, if they're trying to avoid precision then they've done admirably well: I've just drawn another line and the apparent distance on screen between the ticks marked 0.0 and 0.1 is actually slightly greater, to my eye, than the distance between the ticks marked 0.1 and 0.3. There isn't one for 0.2. In fact... Actually, the distance is the same (call me obsessive - I got a real ruler); but even so, not sure why one's only 0.1nm and the other is 0.2. MODDER! ![]() |

Also remember that when you drag the ruler line, the instant it changes from say 0.4 to 0.5 is not at a distance of 0.5, but actually at 0.45.
It's harder to tell in SHIV because of the lack of fine gridlines on the nav map, but easy to see in SHIII. This will impact speed estimate accuracy and therefore torpedo accuracy. |

if I get a contact report, i write down the time of teh radio contact, and after I finally get visual I check out time elapsed and distance traveled. I tend to trust that speed over anything.
