How many of you Torpedoheads will play their first patrol with the 100% realism settings (MEANING NO EXTERNAL VIEW)?? I think i'm leaving External views "ON" for my 1st patrol since i wanna take a peek around for some eye candy...

Haha, I was about to say the same. Absolutely, I'm going the first few with the camera enabled. Wouldn't even think otherwise... :p
But besides that I don't see any reason not to go with other settings maxed-out; I needed some training wheels at first with SHIII, but assuming everything works as it should in SHIV - I'll manage without. |

I'm going super vanilla with all the bells and whistles. I'll cut them off later

If the replay system available after a patrol is complete and is what it sounds like, then I'll be 100% on my first and last patrol saving watching the action for replays once back in port.

I'll leave all the bells and whistles on, too, for the first patrol or two, but then I'll bump up the realism factor.

I don't even start a career/1st patrol until I have mastered the fundimentals via the tutorials and single missions.
Then I will start a campaign close to 100% realism - everything on real except I always keep externals on as I didn't spend hundreds of $$ on a high end system just to look at the chart and Bernard the whole patrol. ![]() |

Don't really use it to evade escorts -- I just use it while my torps are running. I do have to say it is a bit....exhilarating to follow in the torpedo wake as it nears it's target. I'm constantly popping above the surface to see the ship, then back behind the torp, all the way through the firing solution. |

Yep. Tutorials to get the hang of the new boat, then Externals + 100% Realism (or whatever you can get with externals on).
Then, start searching for mods (or <shudder> perhaps even modding bits myself) to make the thing a proper simulation ![]() r. |

First career I started with SHIII was using NYGM, manual firing and with external ON. In fact that's the only way I've ever played SHIII.
I expect to do something similar in SHIV. One thing I found with SHIII is that certain limitations in resolution make some aspects of manual fire control inordinately difficult (especially stadimeter and recognition.....might explain why the flags in SHIV are so large....I can never see the darn things in SHIII!!). If they address those then that will be great, and really remove any need for any 'external' assistance other than for the 'eye candy' value. Worth noting, too, that the USA's TDC was significantly more sophisticated than the German one, so it should be interesting to see how that is reflected. |

Don't forget there is supposed to be a replay system so you can watch everything after a patrol without peeking with the external cam.

GOT TO HAVE THE EYE CANDY ON! 100% realism can come later.

In SHIII I love watching my boat sail in and out of the harbors. I'm sure I'll do the same in SH4. If the replay lives up to promise I'm sure I'll change my mind quickly.

Reminds me of the old days of Rouge Spear when the real fun was watching the mini-movie you made blowing holes in people. Those were th good ol' days... maybe happy times again with SHIV. Because of the replay system I'll be playing 100% realism.
