I don't see why not. They were identical to the late-model Balaos except for a better dive depth.

I don't think they will make into the game. From what I've seen and heard we'll only get the Gato and Balao class.

One can only hope

"I don't see why not. They were identical to the late-model Balaos except for a better dive depth."

Was that the only difference? Why was the tower such a different shape?

Because that photo was taken between the '50s and '60s or so (I'm not quite sure). This conning tower was installed after the war ended.

That was a post war expemant. The G.U.P.P.Y(Greater Underwater Propulsion Program). A program started to see if the Gato/Balo/Trench classes could be made to par with the type XXI U-Boat(ie. modernized)

Thanks for the explanation. I thought you were yelling at me real loud.

My answer was going to be "good question-I don't know", but I like the other answers better.

lol sorry steve.... i figured your so far away that you wouldnt hear me unless i shouted my lungs out

The tench in that photo seems to be taking on the appearance of early cold war subs. Does anyone know when the tench class was eventualy scrapped for more modern vessles? I assume most gatos, balaos, tenches were in excess after the war and were sold to other countries...

This particular boat, USS Thornback (SS-418), was sold to the Turkish navy in 1971 - decommisioned from the US Navy in July of that year. The Turks used her for 28 years until she was turned into a floating museum
in Istanbul Turkey.

I seriously doubt that the Tench will be included, as I haven't heard any word about that from Ubi. I wish it would be, as I am here in Pittsburgh and the USS Requin at our Carnegie Science Center was a Tench Class. Regardless, I'll be sure to chose the Balao on my first single player mission and take a trip down to visit the Requin that week. I am so excited!

They removed the deck guns and the AA batteries too during GUPPY. I saw a modified Tench in Baltimore during Christmas, the USS Torsk. She's a beautiful boat, although they put the conning tower off limits and I couldn't go look through the scope. I think the USN used her as a training boat for the better part of the Cold War.

I think besides the greater dive depth as SailorSteve already pointed out, the Tench class also carried 28 torpedos instead of 24. However, they really weren't available to the Pacific was in time to have an impact as the Balao and Gato classes had already "gotten the job done".

Cheers!
