Default Decoration errors

I haven't played any of the mods yet, so can't comment if these errors still occur in the other versions. When the original programmers set the conditions for promotions and rewards they did a piss poor job on their homework. I've been a WWII German Miltaria collector for almost 20 years (picked it up when my dad used to drag me to guns shows all the time) and on my recent patrol was kinda shocked when I looked into my awards case.

In my current game, its december 1940, have 201,000 tons sunk so far and have only gotten 1 promotion (myself). Yet, as I actually looked at the medals in the case (something I'd ignored largely tell now) was mad at what medals I had received - everything save the wound badge. First thing that really pissed me off was the gold submarine clasp (an item I'm saving up for to purchase (silver though) as good ones are well over $1000), a gold version was never commisioned, only bronze and silver were awarded. These clasps weren't awarded till 1944, prior to that they didn't exist.

Their second mistake is awarding the submarine badge with diamonds. Only 29 of these were ever awarded, and you have to have a RK with OL in order to be eligible to receive it. Only the best of the best aces were awarded it, and ingame its the first award you receive!

The liberal use of awarding the RK and its extras is also a real dissapointment. During the war 7000+ were awarded, for a good sub captain able to stay alive and rack up some good tonage wouldn't be out of place to receive it. 881 oak leaves were awarded during the war, 159 with swords, and only 27 with gold and diamonds. In my current game a little over year has passed and have already got the RK with diamonds. Granted my tonage is (comparing it to historical records) is good, as the best U-Boot ace had 367,000 tons sunk. Only aspect that I can think that makes the computer accelerate the decorations is my mastery of the deck gun; which I've used to sink a lot of warships. In similar games that you receive decorations they are typically more satisfying as they are harder to achieve, the system they have here makes the awards a joke and leaves little to no feeling of accomplishment.

Or more exactly: only 27 with diamonds and only 1 with golden leaves.

And yes, that thing is screwed up, but there's no way you could modify what medals you get as a Kaleun. But if you are using SH3 Commander, you can use it's option to correct the medals and awards of your crew - try it.

SH3Cmdr is a good way to fix these mistakes. As for the promotions, try not to spend many of your renown points. Once they accumulate the game promotes you accordingly. After that go ahead and spend them (I know, thats also a stupid way to handle renown and promotions)

Try one of the major mods nd you'll find thinks much difficult, stock SH3 is almost an arcade game.
In GWX you won't stand a chance on a gun duel with any armed ship.
The other big factor that influences the high tonnage patrols is that there's a lot more traffic in gme that in real life, but if any of the mods corrects that to the correct values you'll play a lot of 1 month patrols without even seeing a ship.

Oh... that's definitely not exact true. It's harder than in stock, but in my current career I won a battle against 2 Swans, a Flower and a Hunt I with only 6% hull damage, so it's still possible. But very risky... Other time I could NOT sink even 1 destroyer (luckily made it stationary, so she was not a real threat any more).

EDIT: The word NOT was missing in the original post.

Are you talking campaign? At which difficulty level?.

I know a lot of the people around here are very acknowledgeable in u-boat history and are sticklers when it comes to accuracy. I don’t want my u-boat being able to go 40knots or nor do I want an 18inch deck gun, but when it comes to medals I open to just about anything, it’s only a game and even if only a few of the diamond ones were given out in real life I’m trying to change that in my little computer world. And the medals are only a very small part of it, if I come to a end of a career (so far only thru death) I don’t look at the medals I look at what tonnage I have.

Have a look at his sig.

Those are unbelievable results for GWX at 100%.

I do believe in the game it's only bronze but you are right this one did not come out until 44. Best to follow the advice from the posts above, your better off using SHC as well.

Morts,
The ships are there. To find them you have to use your hydrophone often. Also you have to be in an area where there are ships. Some areas of the ocean are desolate due to local conditions and lack of shipping lanes.

Yes, happens to me also, but it's very rare, as Irish1958 said you must look for traffic lanes, there's always a nice convoy to hunt, in my current patrol I spent 30 dyas without a worthy target and 80% of the days with heavy fog and high seas, I was about to give up and RTB when I pick up a faint sound on a hydro check, it "was" a large convoy, I started shadowing it and suddenly the weather improves , now I have only two torpedoes left and sunk 8 large ships in three different attacks, hit and run before they have a chance to get a good lock on me, and heading back to base running on fumes, patience is always rewarded.

Taking on warships on the surface? I’ve only tried it once in a single mission. It was in the (GWX) “Bismarck”. This is a quick fun little mission if you want action as soon as you start. In one of these missions I went on I got a lot of torpedoes into the enemy warships but when they went down the “Bismarck” got the credit, well I guess he was putting shells into them two, after several of the English sunk they started to break off and head for safety (one DD and one battleship, both heavy wounded). The Bismarck was to beat to pursue them so I decided to go after them. I surfaced and took off after them. I soon caught up and opened fire on the battleship, things were going what I thought pretty good. I was zigzagging and they couldn’t hit me, got close a couple of times. But my hits were not doing much damage that I could see. Then one shot from the BB hit my bow, and I head “man down on deck”, before I could even look another shot from the BB blew me out of the water. So much for attacking warships on the surface, even if they are wounded.
i know it was a BB that did me in but come on

Yes, campaign (I've never played any single mission). See my sig for logs (Current, also patrol 7th in 2nd career, described here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...&postcount=29). I've always played at 100% realism + no map contact update (that makes it 101% realism). And I play DiD, so it was not after 10th reload or anything like that.

EDIT: And the action from current career was described shortly here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=105178

Hmm... And what am I supposed to answer? Should I deny cheating and you'll be even more sure I do cheat or lie... But no, I don't cheat. All that you see there was true, it really happened and no - I didn't reload my game after being killed, as I play DiD. That would definitely steal any pleasure from playing the rest of such cheaten career.

Have also a look at the 3rd career. Maybe that could explain something. Would placing my save files somewhere on the net so that you can check them be any evidence that they were not cheated? I'm not a kind of modder so I don't know.
