Default Sonar operator in GWX, is he asleep?

Hello,

I just installed GWX a few days ago, I have a problem with my sonarman.

The seas are calm (and I mean dead calm, 0 m/sec), the operator has
the sonar qualification, but he can't hear past about 8 km. I had a Large
Cargo steaming at 6 knots on a bearing of about 272 (almost dead to port).
For some reason the sonar operator didn't pick him up until he was inside
8 km .

I just followed him with the scope, but still...

I think this is why I had such a hard time intercepting convoys so far, one convoy
I set intercepts that definitely should have found them (I even reloaded several
times to try again and again) but couldn't locate them (seas were moderate but
fog was heavy).

Is this a common or known problem in GWX?

edit: I was moving at ahead slow, 3 knots.

Thanks,

Rocco

For me the Sonarman works fine...

Maybe he´s tired or still "green" and has no experience? But more than 8km should be no Problem...

Im not sure, but Ive made the experience that my Sonarguy can hear better at 25-30m than at Periscope depth...

Well, he wasn't tired, but it is my first patrol. I did dive down to 20 meters,
but that didn't help him.

I noticed manning the station manually, it was harder to hear the contact
in GWX than in stock.

Some had said it was a little harder to hear (yourself at the phone) with GWX. I have not experienced it. Anyway, get a petty officer and make him a radio operator. Looks like a little lightning bolt. Make him strong with medals and of course patrols. He will hear just fine.

I had the problem where after installing GWX my sonarman could hear allright but when I manned the station I couldn't hear a DD beyond 8-10km. Very odd as previously, in the right conditions I could vaguely hear sounds out to 20+ km. Anyway, I took all the ship _hyd sounds and increased them in sound recorder. Now I'm at least back to being able to hear the ships at a respectable distance. Convoys once more can be picked up at the high 20's or even 30km.

Is he asleep you ask ?

Well, you know on most boats, "Becks" is stored under the Capitan's bed which is right near the sonar position

I'd say he is drunk most of the time

Easy one.
Is Bernard your sonar man? You'll be able to tell as he'll have the headphones on over his nose and the back of his head!

i have trouble with mine too, even at short range i ask sonar man to follow nearest sound contact and he says "no sound contact" but if i manually use hydraphones the contact is there clear as day

The sonarman is the first qualification and promotion I go for

Always ensure you have a second guy suitably qualified and keep em fresh not fatigued

I have that exact same scenario. I wonder how many ships have passed me by without my knowledge simply because the sonar guy didn't hear them. Although I must admit that when I hear a ship and sonar doesn't I've no idea what the range is. I have now taken to doing sonar checks intermittently rather than relying on solely on my sonar guy. I have also noticed that by enabling ambient volume it seems easier to hear ships. Maybe that's just me or maybe it's the key to why the sonar guy has poor hearing.

All I can say is this, when I upgraded my phones and put in a petty officer with the lighting bolt for the radio operator, he works just fine. The biggest difference was the phone upgrade

That Bastard!! Didn't even offer to share!! At least he didn't find my stash
of Budweiser.

So from the sounds of it, somethings not quite right. He is a petty officer with
the sonar ability, and he is not fatigued. Sea is calm, boat travelling at 3 knots at
periscope depth, even descending to 20 meters not helping. It is also hard to hear
on the hydrophones manually, which only one other person said he noticed (but
his sonar guy could hear fine).

I'm guessing I should wipe out the install and try again. I also had a problem
when I first started a patrol on GWX where I selected 2nd Flot. in Oct. 1940
in Lorient. It started me at Kiel in a type II/D. I started up this second
career the same way but it started me correctly in a IX/B at Lorient (the strange
thing, though, is some of the saves that show up on the load screen list me
as a type II).

Something must have gotten corrupted or something.

Thanks everyone,

Rocco
