Default New Ports

If I add new ports to the game, do I have to start a new career, or will the save games I have still work....

Are you saying that you should build your own, or add some new bases.....if you mean the last-mentioned, so you need not necessarily, start a new career,I myself have done like you want, and continue as before

I am trying to add three new ports, I had done this before, but just can't get them to work now. I can place the harbor, but as soon as I mark it as a post, the game crashs.

It is just madding, as I did have it working back in 2006.

Have you done well, in writing and in the cfg files? if you add so I do think that you have to start over, is not 100% sure but there are many indications that,

I believe I found my problem. It looks like your U-boats have to be in port, before you can change the map.

Sorry for seeing this late but the answer is obviously you need to commence a new career because the game will read your saved file and be unable to match up the port list hence the CTD.
