Stabilised Binoculars and Uzo

Hi all,

Just a quick question. When using the periscope it's not fixed and bouncing all over the place - makes it very interesting when tracking a target!

But, the binoculars and Uzo are always fixed (stabilised). Is there a way to 'destabilise' these so they are more lke the periscope?

I find it odd how, in very stormy weather, looking through either of these makes the weather look calm, but a glance through the peri is like a rollercoaster ride!

It would add to the immersion factor if the binocs and uzo reacted the same way as the peri.

Cheers!

Well that'S the kink!

UZO's-are mounted on as special holding Pillar that was desinged to do exactly that! to spabilize the view.

As for the Binos. Well i guess the people holding them balance those things themselves! But i could use some swaying and bobing with the Binos too!:hmm:

i agree, the uzo was stable, but binoculars that are more realistically wobbley would be cool. a person cant hold them perfectly still, especially if stormy weather is moving them around alot

Exactly how was the UZO stabilized? Magic? Even major warships didn't have stabilized fire control systems until 1945, and then it was experimental.

stabilized turrets had been around a long time

uzo most likely had a gimble type stabilizer like early
steady cams did

with a long counter balance offset below it so when ship pitches
one way counter balance earns its name.
not actally magic nor actually very sophisticated by todays standards
but effective in geatly improving stability.

How far down into the ship would it have to go? And how stable would it actually be? The ocean doesn't have one specific speed of movement. Again, no battleships had stabilized viewfinders that I'm aware of, and I would be very surprised to find one on a submarine that was much use at all.

Of course I could easily be wrong, but I have yet to see any actual evidence of such a device.
