Default Success against convoys in GWX!

I just finished my 3rd straight VERY succesful convoy attack in GWX 74% realism.

Between 12 and 14 ships sunk a mission for 80-100 thousand tonnes.

It's a little risky but has worked well so far.

I get myself in to position in front of the convoy and wait for the lead destroyer to pass. I then fire 3 torps at the juiciest targets and instead of diving and running silent i stay at periscope depth, reload torpedoes, about face so i'm travelling "with" the convoy. Now just as you would expect very soon there are destroyers bearing down on you, that's fine, stick ya periscope up a bit higher so they really know where you are!.

I have used this only on Large convoys so far so the destroyers are quiet spread out and can't all hit you at once. Once you spot the closest destroyer head straigtht for him or away from him, 0 or 180 degrees. He will start zig zagging towards you, set your torp depths and open your tubes and wait. He will keep zig zagging until he puts the hammers down and trys to ram you. You need to be paying very close attention to this. As soon as he straigtens up and comes straight for you (usually between 400-600m) fire your torp and dive fast.

I have taken out 8 DD's in a row in 3 missions with this method.

Of course once the destyoers are gone you can go to town on the convoy. Be warned that merchants are armed much earlier in the war than vanilla SH3 so if you want to get up and use your deck gun (who doesn't? ;-) ) then target those ships first.

It is risky but i have had some great success with this in the past 24hrs.

The convoys have been in BF 42 and Bf 43, around there, just west of Brest, it's early 41 and the large convoys are many! Operating from the 7th out of Lorient it's a short drive with some big rewards, longest i have waited is 5 days in that area to get a convoy report.

I rarely use free camera but i do use auto map update, stick ya periscope up and it's a beautiful gods eye view

I try to only attack at night anyway and i can't see a bloody thing at night with GWX so free camera is useless.

it's nice to have it on just to take screenies of those "big ones" you get now again though. I try not to use it to "cheat" just to get more enjoyment out of the game and enjoy the eye candy

I encountered a convoy on my last patrol, took out a pyro, and a medium merchant,to line up a shot on a fiji but as the pyro exploded the dam thing realeased the brakes and hit 17 knts first time I seen a fiji split when thing started to go boom.

The second thing im getting a bit cheesed off with is getting passed the lead escort heading towards dead centre of the convoy to find another escort inside the convoy its now getting harder to even get within a convoy.

Yeah those escorts within can be a real pain in the proverbial! On the plus side they are easy to hit if you target them first.

I love your style... Targetting DD and then merchant

I also use a part of your tactice, since I know that merchant won't hurt you when you dive deep, but DDs DO and their attack are deady

So, for a convoy, I take down the leading DD, going to it at opposite direction, and let the convoy facing me, and let me use the full advantage of bow tubes

I sunk 2 medium convoys completely in a single patrol, at coastal area of India (Of cause with GWX), appox. 14 ships suck. With 70% realism (except dud fish, manual TDC and no weapon officer assistance) my renown pop up by 2500

FOR NEWBIES, DON'T EVER GO TO CONVOYS WITHOUT USING TACTICES, ESP. FOR GWX, YOU WILL DIE WITH ALL HANDS

Early on in the war it was quite common to see a BB or a cruiser in a convoy
The German surface fleet was still active and these ships were there to help fight off attack from them
As they have no DC or Sonar\Asdic they arent really a threat unless they see your scope or you are surfaced
