Default GW vs NYGM mods

I am new to the SH3 community, but I am a AOTD veteran, not to mention ssub classics back to Gato.

Once I got SH3 on my new computer, and put a seperate video card in the machine, I quickly downloaded the GW mod. I did not know about the NTGM mod at the time. Could someone outline the sailent differences between the two?

I started using NYGM because the PC I play on would have been a little underpowered to run GW which adds a lot of graphics, and also because this mod was replacing the original "renown" system which I always disliked by something more realistic (it takes a fixed amount of time in port to fit improvements on the sub) I think if I am right that until now they use the same flooding damage model for surface boats, the fatigue model is a little different and may be the sensors/spotting model of warships make them more dangerous in NYGM than GW.. But as I never played GW, I am sure other Kapt'ns who use it can correct me if I am wrong.
It's just a matter of personal taste then to choose between both. I run SH3 Gen and SH3 Weather on top, plus the fantastic Fubar skins.

Until the next NYGM version comes out ? Nahh just kidding, don't shoot me...
The way the world goes, as soon as SHIV is out, you probably will find this forum mostly empty I guess...

SHIV is still a long way in the future. For now GWX rules. let's judge SHIV once it's here and not jump to conclusions

Wrong assumption sailor. For many players, the true Uboat war means Atlantic Ocean not Pacific. SH 3 got a loooong life ahead especially with those great mods in the pipeline.

Sorry, cannot have an opinion until it's out and available...
From what I saw until now in the past 20 years, there are not many games, even with super mods which resisted to the attraction of the newer version or of another newer game on the same theme. Bet you can count the games who had a lifetime of more than one year.

Agreed I will be one of those... But not sure we will be so many.

I totally agree with you. My opinion (and I have one as I've been playing it for the last three weeks) it is far better than anything else in SH3 domain. But of course that's just me and my opinion. Once it's out you will have the chance to have a go and see for yourelf. I just hope (for the sake of all the GWX team efforts) that you agree with me

Again I totally agree with you. SHIV when it comes out should be an improvement to SH3 in all areas. One hopes that it will be better, but since I've been playing sims for at least 15 years and computer games since the time of Z80 and cassetes, I've learned the hard way not to have very high expectations. Obviously there cannot be a comparison of SH3/GW/NYGM/GWX and any other mod with SHIV as they belong to a different generation. Still with GW/NYGM and GWX SH3 is and most probably will be playable in the near future. And that's really something.

Glad to find someone who also got started with the ZX 81... My first sub game was Silent Service on cassette tape for my Commodore 64, at the same time I was playing Elite... That's already a few years back.

Oh you have me in the memory lane now

BTW Elite is by far one of the best games I've ever came accross

I played both Silent Service and Elite myself.
Also a Star Trek game whose name, alas, eludes me, but with which I spent many an hour working my way upwards through the ranks.
