Default Windows 11...???

With the death of support for Windows 10 coming soon, has anyone switched to Windows 11 and successfully run SH3? Will SH3 even still run on Windows 11?

not yet here

I am always afraid which games will stop work after the migration to new OS.

Working fine for me both Fifi's mod and GWX KC.

SH3 runs on Win 11 just fine. No issues.

Both GWX KC and NYGM Fifi running fine on Windows 11 home. It's not that different from Windows 10.
If the awful day does come I've never had a problem running SH3 on Linux using the Wine compatibility layer. Wine is now better than Windows at running old Windows software. You can run most Linux distributions from a USB memory stick without touching the main OS, so it might come down to having "SH3 on a stick".
Linux is incredibly tolerant of old hardware. I'm writing this on a 14 year old laptop, still in daily use with the latest software and running NYGM enhanced steel coffin edition V3.5 with widescreen. It will not run the latest supermods as it only has Intel built-in graphics and does not have a 1920x1080 display.

...or maybe some one will mod Uboat sufficiently to make it better than SH3.

... or Ubisoft will release a 64 bit remaster.

... or pigs will fly.

Default ..end of (my) life

Well I had it coming I guess. I just upgraded to the latest version 42 of Fedora Linux and everything still runs but I've lost all 3d acceleration from my 14 year old Intel HD 3000 graphics chip. I now get about 3fps playing SH3 using the Wine compatibility layer and the computer overheats very easily.
I've had problems like this before with new releases and until now they have always been patched but I think it's the end of the line. Intel walked away about 10 years ago and I think somebody in the community has got tired of providing support. I will try rolling back the Mesa graphics drivers a couple of versions, but it's a bit of a pfaff and likely to cause something else to break.
I will have to use the new Windows 11 machine in my daughter's gaming cave, but she will be on holiday during the summer. Maybe I should force her to get a job? You know, good experience... times are hard... contribute to the family.... save for college...

It'll work fine in Win 11 as long as you aren't using an Intel video card. I've got an Intel Arc A770 in my Win 11 box and GWX KC crashes within 2 minutes of completion of the loading screen into the GUI - doesn't matter if you're below decks, looking at nav map, or topside.

I have to run GWX KC on my old Win 7 box with an old Radeon 1MB video card where it's 100% stable.

There's something in the d3d9.dll that doesn't play nice with the Intel cards because supposedly it's due to Intel is using dxvk in their translation layer.

I got a crash after a few minutes on daughter's Nvidia based windows 11 PC initially, but I found it was caused by running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP 64 rather than windows 7. Something to check. However you are not the first to report problems with the new Intel chips, the drivers will probably get patched at some point and it is worth pestering Intel if you can get past AI customer support. Linux developers are much more approachable! And almost human. Most of the time.

The d3d9.dll direct x wrapper is a bit of a weak point. It would be nice if it respected custom graphics modes, had some scaling options and was happy running in a window. I don't know where the one SH3 people use comes from; I don't think it was written for SH3. There are a few directx wrappers on sourceforge and I did have a browse around but it's been 20 years since I last did any serious coding. If anyone knows where the source code is I might try having a dabble. Even better if there's a proper coding nerd out there!!!!
If it came to a big rewrite the package dxvk goes from d3d to Vulkan and is presumably what the Intel drivers are doing. However a better starting point might be Wined3d. This is the code used by the Linux package Wine to go from d3d to openGL and it should be supported by old systems better.

I know nothing about the programming piece. I did try multiple different versions of the d3d9.dll including the one that comes with dxvk, to no avail.

Default Wrappers are not all bad

There is a project to go from d3d to openGL on Windows here based on the Linux Wine application.
A new Silent Hunter 3 directX wrapper would be based on this code but would need to intercept the calls to change the screen mode (from sh3.exe) and force the mode specified in d3d9,ini.
I'm investigating...
