Even with XXI it is extremely difficult to get within a firing range of an electric torpedo. At least the XXI has enough speed to allow escape if the attack goes wrong.
I'm in my probably last patrol (April 30th '45) and I plan to take a bunch of long range steam torpedoes for convoy attacks.
