Patrol: Star with binoculars. Sail to the location, stay within the location within some range (I use 80nm) for at least 48 hours. Tonnage is irrelevant.

Sink enemy shipping : Star with flag... Sail to location.. sink enemey MERCHANTS typically around 10 tons, literally anywhere on the map. You do not have to stay near the star. Location is irrelevant once the star is reached. Tonnage sunk before reaching the star will not count. Tonnage must be merchants, military vessels will not count.
