The real XXIII boat was expected to spend all its time submerged, so fuel consumption was very low. The diesel engines were used mostly to recharge the batteries.

Therefore the limiting factor for a patrol was food.

Provisions were carried for about 14-16 days, but these could be rationed (that is, the crew ate less than they should).

The longest patrol was by U 2324 in April 1945. The patrol lasted 36 days (because the crew could not find any targets in thick fog off the Scottish coast), and the food was exhausted completely after 35 days.
