Officers and Gentelmen-- First Signed Copy of Kingmaker
Yesterday I received a phone call and the caller's last words were, "Don't forget the book."
I changed clothes, then took a copy of Kingmaker and wrote: To my friend and former enemy General Oleg Kalugin and signed it. Shortly after, I headed for the unexpected lunch appointment with the former KGB chief of counterintelligence.
Sounds like something out of a spy novel?
Years ago, the good general was somewhat upset over my activities and tried to nail me. A vase with four roses placed on a window sill signaled extreme danger and I managed to escape. Now, with the Cold War over, we are the best of friends. Kalugin has updated his memoir, Spy Master and it will be re-issued shortly. During lunch he asked me to be with him at the offical launching of his book at the International Spy Museum in Washington.
